For a stay in Bordils, the river landscape, agricultural plain and the town’s cultural heritage take centre stage. The Riu Ter forms the municipality’s northern boundary; at the same time, Bordils is closely connected with the river and the surrounding agricultural landscape. Landscape and water management provide a common thread for discovering walks, architecture and local culture.

Riu Ter and Agricultural Landscape

On the banks of the Riu Ter, Ban de Bordils preserves emblematic poplar plantations. The plain is shaped by fruit trees, cereal and vegetable cultivation, as well as poplars and plane trees. It is also home to internationally recognised nurseries for garden and ornamental plants. Agriculture and plant cultivation thus meet in the landscape.

The Séquia Vinyals irrigation zone covers approximately 804 hectares. Of this area, 224 hectares are irrigated in Celrà, 305 hectares in Bordils, 90 hectares in Sant Joan de Mollet, 75 hectares in Flaçà and 110 hectares in Juià. These figures place the plain in the context of several municipalities and also show Bordils’ share of this irrigation area.

The Séquia Vinyals is a historic water-management and irrigation system. It uses public waters of the Riu Ter at Campdorà. The system comprises a diversion weir, a main canal and secondary canals, as well as sluice gates, pipelines, lifting facilities and other technical installations. It therefore links the use of river water with extensive infrastructure across the agricultural landscape.

Buildings and Local Culture

The church of Sant Esteve de Bordils was built in the second half of the 16th century in the Late Gothic style, with Renaissance details. Its distinctive features include an octagonal bell tower with pointed-arch openings, gargoyles and balustrades, as well as an ornate façade and decorated portal. On the west façade, a large rose window made up of 25 panels sits above the entrance. These details give the church a distinctive architectural character and make the transition between Late Gothic forms and Renaissance elements easy to trace.

The washhouse on Carrer Almeda is also part of the architectural heritage. It is one of two public, municipally owned washhouses in Bordils and was last restored in 2007. Cultural life also includes three sardanas dedicated to Bordils and a collaborative audio archive. The archive collects audio memories of local places, complementing the visible buildings with personal stories about the area.

A walking route through the work of artist Leo Alejo’s sculptures is planned in Bordils. This adds a perspective on art in the town to its other cultural themes. Together with the church, washhouse and audio archive, it shows that culture in Bordils is expressed through historic architectural forms as well as artistic works and shared memories.

Routes, Food Culture and Getting There

For a walk, the 8.5-kilometre “Ruta dels arbres monumentals” route passes through Bordils’ green spaces and paths to twelve emblematic trees in the municipality. Another way to get around is the easy 14-kilometre cycling route “De Girona a Bordils (per la passarel·la de Celrà)”: it starts in Girona, follows the course of the Riu Ter to the church of Sant Esteve de Bordils and goes over the Ter footbridge near Celrà. The routes therefore differ in length and mode of travel; check the cycling route conditions before setting off.

“Menja’t Bordils” brings together local bars, restaurants, bakeries and products that offer a taste of the town through its food culture. Individual businesses may change, so check current information about specific offerings if you are interested. Bordils is served by the Barcelona–Portbou railway line. Check current train services separately when planning your journey.
