Beget offers two distinct highlights for a stay: Romanesque cultural heritage in the village and excursions into the natural area of Alta Garrotxa. The village centre is also divided into three sectors by streams and bridges. You can get to know Beget in different ways: by exploring its churches and buildings, its layout, or the walking and cycling routes.

Romanesque Art and Historic Ensemble

The church of Sant Cristòfol de Beget preserves a Romanesque Majesty altarpiece dating from the 12th to 13th century. Beget’s historic ensemble is listed as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (BCIN) in the “Conjunt Històric” category. The designation applies to the ensemble, while the altarpiece is a specific work of art in the church. This offers two distinct cultural and historical perspectives: the classification of the village and an individual work of art.

Visiting hours for the church of Sant Cristòfol de Beget are listed as 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. From the Feast of St John until 15 September, the hours are 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Check whether these hours apply before visiting.

Village Layout and Bridges

The village centre consists of three sectors or neighbourhoods. Two streams separate them, and two bridges connect them. This layout is a distinctive part of the village’s appearance: as well as individual buildings, you can also notice how the waterways and crossings divide the three parts and link them together.

Pont de Beget may date from the 14th century. Together with the Romanesque altarpiece, it offers a broader historical perspective rather than a single period of origin: the altarpiece is dated to the 12th to 13th century, while the bridge may date from the 14th century.

The hamlet of Salarça (Beget) is home to the church of Sant Valentí de Salarça, also known as Sant Valentí de Salarsa. It is protected as a cultural asset of local interest. Administratively, it lies within the municipality of Camprodon in Ripollès; geographically, it is in the natural subregion of Alta Garrotxa. This example shows that administrative boundaries and natural areas can provide different ways of classifying a place.

Excursions in Alta Garrotxa

Beget is located in the natural area of Alta Garrotxa. Its valuable natural surroundings include a stream and ravines. The area is suitable for walking and cycling excursions. So, alongside the churches and historic village setting, the landscape and outdoor activities offer distinct ways to enjoy your stay.

The BI6000 mountain bike route includes Beget as one of the villages along the route in the Vall de Camprodon. Another named route, “Beget and Rocabruna along the smugglers’ paths,” follows old trails to the natural and cultural heritage of Alta Garrotxa. The first is specifically a mountain bike route; the second highlights old trails and natural and cultural heritage. Check the latest route details before setting out.
