Discover Capmany: Wine, Walking Trails and Megalithic Culture
Accommodation in Capmany
If you’re looking for a hotel in Capmany, you can tailor your trip to your interests in wine, landscape, megalithic culture and local traditions. The village setting combines vineyards and centuries-old olive trees with Mediterranean woodland; activities include a megalithic circular route, a short walk around the village and wine-related experiences. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between them: the village walk is a short circuit, while the Ruta Megalítica connects cork oak forests and archaeological sites.
Landscape and Walking Trails
Capmany’s landscape shifts between vineyards, centuries-old olive trees and Mediterranean woodland of cork oaks, pines and oaks. The Ruta Megalítica is a circular route through cork oak forests. Trail conditions may change seasonally, so check them before setting out.
The official village walk is on a different scale: it is about 220 metres long, takes around five minutes at a leisurely pace and is almost flat. This makes it easy to fit a short walk around the village into your schedule, while the Ruta Megalítica is a separate walking destination through the forest.
Megalithic Heritage
Among the archaeological sights on the official megalithic route is the Dolmen del Quer Afumat. It lies about two kilometres north of Capmany and has a rectangular chamber and a very massive capstone. Near Quer Afumat is a large granite outcrop called Pedra dels Sacrificis. Its engraved markings on the upper surface are characteristic of megalithic culture. The two names refer to different features: Quer Afumat is the dolmen, while Pedra dels Sacrificis is the nearby rock outcrop.
Wine, Tastings and El Parral
Agrobodega El Parral offers a tasting of five wines from different areas of the Empordà, accompanied by a selection of cured meats or cheeses. Check the booking conditions before planning the tasting for a specific day of your trip.
In February 2024, Vi-Vent was presented as a wine interpretation centre in one of the three halls of the El Parral building. At the time, the visit programme included farming tools, various agricultural machines and historical images of Sindicat El Parral.
Culture and Local Traditions
The Museu de les Aixetes houses almost 5,000 taps from major wine-producing countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Spain. The collection offers a different perspective on the region’s wine heritage from a tasting: here, the focus is on objects from several wine-producing countries.
The Capella de Sant Sebastià is a religious building dedicated to Saint Sebastian, who is regarded as a protector against epidemics. The Festa del Ranxo invites everyone to take part: a communal dish is cooked in copper cauldrons and shared. The Festa Major de Capmany, held in honour of Saint Àgata, combines religious celebrations, popular activities, performances and dances.
The two festivals also differ when planning a trip: the Ranxo centres on a shared meal, while the Festa Major includes religious and popular events. Check the current calendar if you’d like to plan your trip around one of the festivals.
