Cervià de Ter: Medieval Traces and Routes Along the Ter
Accommodation in Cervià De Ter
If you are considering Cervià de Ter as a destination for a stay, you can plan around two themes: historic buildings and routes through landscapes along the Ter. The sights and routes offer different focal points. On one side are the monastery, medieval traces and historic houses; on the other, riverbanks, tree plantations and wooded areas.
Medieval Traces and the Monastery of Santa Maria
The Monastery of Santa Maria de Cervià was founded in 1053 by local landowners Silvi Llobet and Adelaida. Its features include three apses decorated with Romanesque paintings and a cloister. Its founding history and surviving architectural elements give the monastery a distinct place among the town’s historic sights.
The historic centre also preserves numerous remains from the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The medieval wall encloses the Torre de les Hores. At the Castle of Cervià, the foundations of the keep, sections of the surrounding wall and remains of several rooms have survived. The old washhouses are also among the sights of Cervià de Ter. Together, these places show different aspects of the town’s history without needing to be treated as a single architectural complex.
Houses and Architecture in Cervià de Ter
The Museu Raset houses a manor house whose oldest part dates from the 13th century and displays Gothic and Renaissance features. The house is also connected with the history of Antonio Machado: it sheltered him in 1939 during his journey into exile. Here, the historical connection and the architecture go together, but remain distinct aspects of the building.
Sant Cristòfol de Raset is a building reconstructed in the 17th century, with pointed Gothic-style vault ribs or arches. Can Japic, also known as Can Piernau, is a two-storey farmhouse west of Cervià de Ter, on the other side of the Arner stream. Its striking architectural details are Renaissance windows and a large round-arched doorway bearing the inscribed date 1564. At Can Santamaria near Raset, fortification remains with loopholes and 16th-century herringbone-pattern masonry have survived.
Older Remains and Historical Periods
The Dolmen de la Castellana stands on the summit of the Serra d’en Martina. It consists of seven stone slabs and is considered the oldest historical record of Cervià de Ter. The Roman villa of La Quintana, near the monastery, represents a different period: it was in use from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD, and its heyday was between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The dolmen and the villa thus represent different historical eras and can be considered separate stops in the past.
Routes Along the Ter and Through the Landscape
The banks of the Ter south of Cervià de Ter are ideal for walks on foot and by bicycle. Near Cervià, the riverbanks also provide a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, especially birds. The route per les Deveses de Cervià starts in front of the Monastery of Santa Maria and passes through tree plantations on its way to the river. Along the way, the distinctive landscape and its great biodiversity take centre stage.
The Ruta del Ter offers another route: it crosses the Deveses of Sant Jordi Desvalls and Cervià de Ter, then continues to the Monastery of Santa Maria, the historic centre and the Castle of Cervià de Ter. Those interested in the route pel Cervià Forestal will find a different focus: it explores the wooded part of the municipality and leads to a Roman bridge that was part of the ancient Via Augusta.
For a shorter outing, the route a la Font d’en Baró i a Raset leads to the traditional picnic spot Font d’en Baró in Cervià de Ter. The route per les Deveses, by contrast, highlights the river and its biodiversity, while pel Cervià Forestal brings together woodland and Roman history.
The Camí de Sant Jaume also passes through Cervià de Ter. This pilgrimage route is one of the best-known in the world; its 53-kilometre section through the Gironès passes through the town, among other places. It therefore adds a section of a longer pilgrimage route to the local routes.
