Accommodation in Corçà
Corçà combines a medieval town layout with churches and other traces from different periods of local history. It is also home to the ecological Món-Empordà market, which follows a regular schedule. Fields, small woods and quiet paths also shape the landscape. You can tailor your stay around architectural history, market life or the rural character of the town.
Townscape and historic buildings
Corçà’s town centre retains its medieval layout. Among the surviving remains of the fortifications known as “Les muralles i el Castell de Corçà” is a section of wall on Plaça del Rebot. It is around 30 metres long, about 10 metres high and approximately 1.40 metres thick. These measurements give an idea of the proportions of this section and make the fortifications a tangible trace of the town’s history.
The locations of two churches also lend distinct character to the townscape: the 18th-century chapel of Sant Sebastià stands at the edge of town on the road towards Anyells. By contrast, the parish church of Sant Julià de Corçà is in the centre of town, on Plaça de l’Església. Its history dates back further than the building described today: Sant Julià is documented as early as 1065 in a will.
The church of Sant Julià was rebuilt in the 17th or 18th century and retains parts of the earlier Romanesque temple. Its early written mention, later rebuilding and surviving older structural elements can therefore be viewed as distinct stages in its history; the year 1065 refers to the documentation, not the construction date of the present building.
Santa Cristina de Corçà is another architectural feature of note. The church consists of a single nave and a semicircular apse whose shape approaches that of a horseshoe. The base of the apse appears to date from the 10th century, while the rest of the building dates from the 12th or 13th century. Santa Cristina is protected as a Local Cultural Asset and listed in the Catalan Inventory of Architectural Heritage under number IPAC 7018.
Market and artistic activities
The ecological Món-Empordà market takes place on the second Saturday of every month in Plaça del Firal de Corçà. As the date may change, check the calendar if you are planning your visit around the market. The monthly schedule provides a guide to timing, while the programme may vary with each edition.
The Món-Empordà markets also feature talks, workshops, music and art. The market is therefore not just a recurring event, but also a cultural programme whose individual offerings may differ from one edition to another.
As part of Art & Gavarres, participating artists spend a week creating works on site from natural materials. Unlike the monthly market schedule, this event focuses on a concentrated period of artistic work. Activities at the festival may also vary from one edition to another.
Landscape and character of Corçà
The landscape around Corçà is gently rolling, with fields, small woods and quiet paths. These connect farmsteads, hamlets and settlements. The landscape is therefore made up not only of individual buildings or the town centre, but also of different settlements and agricultural land.
This offers several ways to plan your trip: in town, the remains of the fortifications and the history of the churches take centre stage; the market offers a recurring monthly event, while Art & Gavarres comprises a week-long period of artistic work. The landscape, in turn, gives Corçà a rural character that differs from its historic architectural forms. Which of these aspects matters most to you depends on whether you are more interested in local history, a cultural programme or the landscape.
