Discover El Far d'Empordà
Accommodation in El Far d'Empordà
El Far d'Empordà offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: walks, wetlands, viewpoints, and medieval and Romanesque buildings. When looking for a hotel, you can weigh up whether nature and scenery or history and local festivals should be the focus of your stay.
Walks and trails
The Passeig naturalista pel Codollar del Riu Manol is a local nature walk. El Far d'Empordà also has walks of five to eight kilometres along routes and paths suitable for everyone. One walk leads from El Far to Estany de Fonolledes. Quiet roads are suitable for walking and cycling.
The options differ in terms of planning: the walks are described as five to eight kilometres long, while the route to Estany de Fonolledes has a specific destination. Quiet roads are suitable for two activities, walking and cycling. You can therefore consider whether a particular distance, a named destination or cycling matters most to you.
Wetland and viewpoints
The Estany Bernat wetland fills with migratory birds at certain times of the year. Migratory birds are a seasonal feature of the wetland.
Four viewpoints offer different perspectives. From the Mirador de l'església, you can see large parts of the Empordà plain. At the Mirador de la Xarxa, the view along the horizon stretches from Cap de Creus to Coll de Banyuls, taking in Pení and the Serra de Rodes. The Mirador de la Barana reveals the contrast between Figueres’s urban landscape and the rural landscape of the Empordà plain. La Muralla is a viewpoint over the landscape surrounding El Far d'Empordà.
When choosing between these viewpoints, it helps to consider the difference between expansive views and contrasting landscapes: the Mirador de l'església looks out over the plain, while the Mirador de la Barana sets urban and rural landscapes against each other. The Mirador de la Xarxa offers a far-reaching horizon, while La Muralla looks out over the surroundings of El Far.
Buildings and history
Can Dalmau is a medieval farmhouse in the town centre, next to the castle wall. The Església de Sant Martí del Far is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. It has gargoyles at the upper outer corners. The Romanesque designation describes the church’s style; the gargoyles add another architectural detail to its exterior.
The Rec d'Àlguema is also part of the area’s history: it enabled grain mills to operate, some of which remained in operation until the end of the 19th century. The historical themes therefore extend beyond individual buildings to include the former use of the watercourse.
Annual festivals
The Festa d'Estiu takes place in mid-July, and the Festa Major de Sant Martí on 11 November. The Festa Major programme may vary. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific event details before making plans.
