El Mas Fumats: Hiking Routes and Settlement History
Accommodation in El Mas Fumats
If you are looking for a hotel in El Mas Fumats, understanding the destination can help you plan your trip. The hiking trails follow different routes: the E25 goes via Puig de Queralbs and along the ridge to Castell de Verdera; the trail from Bellavista runs relatively level through olive groves. Mas Fumats was used for agriculture until the 1960s; the settlement of holiday homes developed gradually through the work of EREC SL and numerous private individuals.
Hiking Routes and Road Orientation
The E25 route, “Pujada al castell de Verdera,” begins on the GI-614 opposite the A7 road from Roses to Mas Fumats. From there, it heads east past Mas Fumats to Puig de Queralbs, then continues along the ridge to Castell de Verdera.
The route “Pels dominis de Sant Pere de Rodes” follows a different described course. From Bellavista, it follows a relatively level trail through olive groves to the Mas Fumats development. The trail from Bellavista runs relatively level through olive groves to the settlement; the E25, by contrast, goes via Puig de Queralbs and along the ridge to Castell de Verdera. The routes therefore differ in their terrain and waypoints. Trail conditions and signage may vary along this route.
Another section of the same route lies at the southeastern edge of the Mas Fumats development. There, it follows a path to the GI-614, crosses the road and then continues for about 90 m along a side road to the Can Palau junction. Trail and road conditions may change.
The A7 from Roses to Mas Fumats serves as a shortcut toward Cadaqués. The A7 serves as a shortcut toward Cadaqués and as a road reference point; the hiking trails have their own routes and reference points. For the E25, these include the starting point on the GI-614 and the destination at Castell de Verdera. The “Roses a peu” hiking event also had its own starting and ending point in Mas Fumats: the completed event included a route that began and ended there.
Landscape and Local History
Until the 1960s, Mas Fumats was used for agriculture. The land was used for cork oaks, olive groves, gardens and vineyards. Its present character as a settlement of holiday homes developed gradually as these houses were built, driven by the property development company EREC SL and numerous private individuals.
Another landmark in the landscape is the Dolmen del Puig Saquera. It lies on a steeply sloping mountain ridge above the Mas Fumats development, at about 300 m above sea level. This approximate elevation places the dolmen in the higher landscape above the settlement. The dolmen connects the landscape with cultural heritage.
