Ger combines routes along the Segre with high-altitude parts of the municipality and historic portals. This brings together river landscapes, outdoor activity and architectural history when choosing a destination. The hiking routes range from a short, flat path by the river to circular routes of varying lengths and elevation gains. If you are looking for a hotel in Ger, you can first consider whether routes, landscapes or architectural history should shape your stay.

The Segre and high-altitude areas

The municipality of Ger extends for about one kilometre on both sides of the Segre. At the same time, more than a third of the municipal area lies above 2,000 metres. These two figures illustrate different spatial scales: the river corridor and the large proportion of high-altitude land. The section of the Segre in the Ger area is part of the Riberes de l’Alt Segre Natura 2000 site. Between the Feixa refuge and Puigpedrós lies another area belonging to the Tossa Plana-Puigpedrós Natura 2000 site.

For a riverside walk, consider a flat, 420-metre-long route that you can reach on foot from Ger. It runs alongside the Segre and is suitable for families. Its short length clearly sets it apart from the longer circular routes in the area.

Compare hiking paths and routes

La Ronda de Ger follows hiking trail 170 through the Les Valls stream area. From there, the route can be extended towards Coforn and Niula. Route 18 Ger–All–Montmalús–Ger offers a different itinerary: it starts in Ger, follows part of the Camí de Sant Jaume as far as All, then climbs to Montmalús and returns to the starting point.

Two circular routes can be compared by length and elevation gain. The approximately 7.5-kilometre route leads to the Prades de Segre by the river and to the Quadres Sanctuary; the return is via All and the Serra d’All. This circuit has an indicated elevation gain of around 125 metres. Another 9-kilometre circular route passes through Gréixer and Niula on its way back to Ger and has an elevation gain of around 350 metres. This gives you a choice between a shorter route with a gentler climb and a longer circuit with more elevation gain.

For a considerably longer outing, an approximately 32-kilometre route goes from Ger through Gréixer and Montmalús to the Cabanella and Feixa refuges. The return route passes through Meranges on the way back to Ger. Its approximate length and sequence of intermediate stops make this tour quite different in scale from the two shorter circular routes.

There is also a dedicated route option for mountain bikers: the 19-kilometre BTT route goes from Ger through Sant Pere, Gréixer, Montmalús, Coforn and Niula before returning. Its elevation gain is listed as 550 metres. Its distance and stated ascent make it easy to compare with the hiking routes, while still recognising that they involve different ways of travelling.

Historic portals and buildings

The portal of Santa Eugènia de Saga dates from the 12th century and is made of marble from Isòvol. Four recessed archivolts frame the portal; the capitals depict birds and foliage. Its materials, form and ornament offer different details that can be used to describe the building.

Santa Coloma de Ger reflects a different historical context. The building was extensively reconstructed in the 18th century, but its main door retains Romanesque iron fittings. The 18th-century door is made of pink marble from Isòvol; the dressed stones of the door jambs depict hunters and dogs. Here, later construction work meets an older decorative feature.

Sant Climent de Gréixer is a rural building from the 12th century with a portal made of marble from Isòvol. Together with Santa Eugènia de Saga, it offers a comparison between two portals from the same period, while Santa Coloma de Ger, with its 18th-century reconstruction and Romanesque iron fittings, represents a different historical period.
