Les Pereres lies on the Segre in the plain. Two distinct themes are central to planning your trip: hiking trails and the architectural history of Sant Esteve de les Pereres. You can plan your stay around whether you want to include a route on foot or learn more about the development of the church.

Hiking Trails and Routes

The Ruta Segre is an easy route covering 8 km, with an estimated duration of 2 hours. The combination of distance and difficulty gives you a framework for choosing; the duration is explicitly an estimate. Check local information before setting out in case conditions change.

The Ruta RomĂ nic is a circular hiking trail. This means the two tours offer different points of reference: the Ruta Segre can be assessed by distance, difficulty, and estimated duration, while the Ruta RomĂ nic can be assessed by its circular route. When making your initial choice, it may be important whether you prioritize specific time and distance figures or the shape of the route.

Route 5 of the VIA ROMANICA also leads to Sant Esteve de les Pereres through the Barony of Urtx. This adds a route leading to the church and making the building a destination along a tourist route, alongside the hiking trails. Route conditions may change; check the current route before planning a tour.

Sant Esteve de les Pereres: Architectural History and Floor Plan

Sant Esteve de les Pereres dates back to between the 11th and 12th centuries. In the 18th century, the church was extensively remodeled, supported and reinforced, and expanded with two side chapels. These are located in the middle of the nave; their position gives the floor plan the shape of a Greek cross. Both the church’s early origins and the later changes to its architectural form are therefore defining stages in its history.

The nave is the lengthwise main part of the church building. The location of the side chapels in its middle explains how their addition shapes the overall floor plan. To understand the architecture, it is therefore worth considering the chapels not only as individual structural elements, but also in terms of their effect on the floor plan.

The most recent restoration work on Sant Esteve de les Pereres was completed in 2008. The timeline can thus be divided into three periods: its origins between the 11th and 12th centuries, the extensive remodeling in the 18th century, and the later restoration work. This sequence helps distinguish the medieval starting point from the later remodeling and restoration, without reducing the building’s history to a single date.

December is associated with the Festa Major in honor of Sant Esteve. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the current date in advance.
