Llanca combines coastal scenery with historic architecture and art. The municipality has 7 km of coastline, with 22 beaches and small coves. Alongside its coastal setting, the port district, historic buildings and Museu de l'Aquarel·la are among the town’s cultural highlights. This lets you consider coastal and cultural interests together when choosing your destination.

Coast and protected areas

Llanca is surrounded by the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus and the Paratge Natural d'Interès Nacional de l’Albera, both on land and at sea. A regional project of the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus covers eight municipalities, including Llanca; these municipalities belong to the natural park and its area of influence. The surrounding protected areas thus form part of a project that spans several municipalities, linking Llanca with others.

Port district and historic buildings

The port district began to take shape at the end of the 17th century, when several fishermen settled outside the town centre. Its origins add the development of a district founded by fishermen to the area’s architectural history.

The Castell-Palau de l’Abat served as the residence of the lords of Sant Pere de Rodes; justice was also administered there. As both a residence and a place where justice was administered, the building brings together two historical functions and can be associated with the lords of Sant Pere de Rodes as well as with the administration of justice in the past.

The Torre Romànica is the only surviving architectural element of the former church of Sant Vicenç. It is therefore specifically associated with a particular church, while the Castell-Palau is connected with residence and the administration of justice. Comparing these buildings reveals different historical associations: one with the former church, the other with the lords of Sant Pere de Rodes and the administration of justice.

Art and fishing history

The Museu de l'Aquarel·la was Spain’s first watercolour museum. Its collection includes several works by Martínez Lozano, as well as works by other artists. Watercolour art thus stands alongside the buildings and local history as a distinct cultural highlight of Llanca.

Along the Ruta de les platges i les arts de pesca, information panels at important beaches and locations in Llanca explain traditional fishing methods. The locations mentioned include Cap de Ras, Grifeu, El Port, El Castellar, La Farella, Les Tonyines and Cau del Llop. The route draws attention both to coastal locations and to the history of fishing. The panels’ condition may change; check what is currently on display on site before your visit.

Getting your bearings

The Oficina de Turisme is the municipality’s main tourist information centre. It is located in the Casa del Mar, by the port car park. If you plan to visit, check the seasonal opening hours in advance.
