Llers brings together the history of medieval fortifications, churches built in different periods and the dry-stone building tradition of the Garriga d’Empordà. These themes offer practical points of reference when planning a trip: Castell de Llers and Castell d’Hortal represent different forms of defensive architecture, while Sant Quirze d’Olmells and Sant Julià reflect distinct histories of church construction. Dry-stone huts and a cave add further architectural and natural features to the cultural picture.

Castles and the History of Fortifications

Castell de Llers is listed in Catalonia as a Cultural Asset of National Interest. This high medieval fortified complex is located in the upper part of the town. Its large cylindrical main tower is surrounded by a trapezoidal wall. The location and course of the wall give a tangible impression of the complex’s form; the listing also indicates its cultural status.

The history of Castell de Llers is associated with resistance to the troops of Felip III l’Ardit during the Crusade against Catalonia in 1285. The year refers to this event, not to a construction date. The fortified historic area around Llers also once contained a network of eleven castles. This places the individual castle in a broader historical context.

Castell d’Hortal offers a different perspective on defensive architecture through its distinct layout: it was a simple rectangular fortress adapted to the irregularities of the terrain, with a round tower surrounded by a curtain wall. The surviving remains date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The two sites display different architectural features: Castell de Llers has a cylindrical main tower and a trapezoidal wall, while Castell d’Hortal has a rectangular ground plan and a walled round tower.

Churches and Their Histories

Església de Sant Quirze d’Olmells is a restored pre-Romanesque church dating from the 9th century. It stands in a forest about three kilometres southwest of Llers, between Mas Molar and Mas Oliveres. The original vault is preserved in the apse; services are not held in the church. Its construction period, location and surviving vault each offer a different clue to understanding this place of worship.

A different period takes centre stage at Església Parroquial de Sant Julià. The parish church was built after the Spanish Civil War to replace an older church that had been destroyed in February 1939. Its apse contains a mural by the painter Josep Ministral. The building’s history points to its predecessor, while the painting provides a distinct artistic reference.

Another architectural detail is the Porta dovellada. Its bas-relief can be seen at the Centre Social de Llersenc, formerly the Casal.

Dry-Stone Structures and Caves

At Paratge del Pla Vinyers in the Garriga d’Empordà area of Llers, ten dry-stone huts are listed as local cultural assets of particular interest (BCIL). The Garriga d’Empordà is a significant Catalan cultural heritage area associated with dry-stone building. In 2014, 97 dry-stone huts in the municipalities of Llers, Avinyonet de Puigventós, Vilanant, Biure and Pont de Molins were listed as BCIL. The ten huts at Pla Vinyers and the 97 huts across five municipalities therefore refer to different levels of the cultural landscape.

Cova l’Avenc de la Calma offers a different scale: it is 52 metres deep and has a 175-metre-long cave section. Several galleries and shafts make up its structure, alongside speleothems and a prism-shaped calcite block of considerable size. The comparison shifts the focus from human-made structures to cave spaces and mineral formations.
