The historical character of Pujals dels Pagesos is reflected in the church of Santa Maria, landmarks in the surrounding area and the town’s history. Pujals began as a hamlet inhabited by farmers who were dependent on the lords of Pujals dels Cavallers. Older records refer to the settlement as Podialis Rusticorum. The destination can therefore be understood through its local history, sacred art and specific routes alike.

Church of Santa Maria: Architecture and Art

The church of Santa Maria de Pujals dels Pagesos has a single-nave interior, a semicircular apse and a roof with a pointed barrel vault. A single-nave interior is a main space with one nave; the apse forms the semicircular end of the church interior. A pointed barrel vault is a type of vault with a pointed cross-section. These terms describe different aspects of the building: its main space, its end and the shape of its vault.

The church also preserves a Gothic limestone baptismal font and a silver processional cross from the 16th century. The remains of G. Pere Palol and Guillem de CornellĂ  lie in a small ossuary dated 1333. A Romanesque Christ in Majesty was discovered during work on the church in 1982. The date of the ossuary and the year the Christ was discovered are distinct: 1333 refers to the ossuary, while 1982 refers to the discovery of the Christ.

Historic buildings in the surrounding area

Nearby is the old hamlet of Palol de Farga, with a group of centuries-old houses of considerable interest. The windows of Can Deri are also in the area: they are Gothic-Renaissance in style and date from the 14th to the 16th century. An icehouse with a diameter of seven metres is also located nearby, beside the Farga stream. Its structural condition may change. The region’s architectural history thus ranges from a hamlet with several houses to individual windows and an icehouse.

Routes and directions

A municipal list of routes, current as of June 2019, names three different paths. The CamĂ de Mas Batllori is 599 metres long and runs from the CamĂ de Sords a Pujals dels Pagesos to the old CamĂ Vell de Palol de Farga. The CamĂ de Can FerrĂł connects the old road from Palol de Farga directly with Pujals dels Pagesos and is 522 metres long. The Mas Batllori is therefore 77 metres longer than the Can FerrĂł.

The Camí de Can Sentric starts behind the church, heads east between fields towards the Bosc d’en Sentric, then continues to the road. While the comparison of the Mas Batllori and Can Ferró lengths gives a quick sense of scale, the starting point and sequence of landscape features define the route described for the Can Sentric. As the condition of the path may change, check it before setting out.

Pujals dels Pagesos in the landscape

The road from Banyoles to Sant Esteve de Guialbes via Pujals dels Pagesos and on to Vilademuls provides a reference point for exploring the Terraprim d’Empordà landscape. The access roads in this landscape also include roads leading to Pujals dels Pagesos. The town is thus both a point of reference on a regional road route and a place with its own settlement and church history.
