In Riells i Viabrea, 60 percent of the municipal area is part of the Parc Natural del Montseny and its area of influence. The MassĂs del Montseny was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978. At 1,307 metres, TurĂł de Morou is the highest point in the municipality. Notable historic buildings include Romanesque churches and medieval towers.

Montseny landscapes and trails

The signposted PR-C 201 route to Castell de Montsoriu starts at Riells-Viabrea station and ends at the castle. It passes through Riells i Viabrea and Breda, as well as cork oak woodland and scrubland. Regardless of the route, Riells i Viabrea is one of the municipalities with a RENFE station for travelling to Parc Natural del Montseny. For route planning, the trails offer different points of reference: the PR-C 201 lists the station and destination; the Vía Verde Breda–Viabrea runs for 2.27 kilometres between Breda and Riells i Viabrea.

The VĂa Verde is completely separated from motorised traffic and intended for walks and cycling. It connects directly to Viabrea-Breda station, which is on the R2 line of Rodalies de Catalunya. Check local conditions before your outing and the current timetable before travelling by train.

Romanesque churches and medieval towers

The Ermita de Sant Llop stands on Turó de Sant Llop at an elevation of 246 metres, surrounded by the Riells and Sant Llop streams. The small church is Romanesque; its main portal dates from 1606. Another Romanesque church is the Església de Sant Martí de Riells del Montseny, whose construction dates to the 12th century. Both churches invite visitors to look out for their different architectural and historical features: at Sant Llop, the elevation and the date of the portal are specific points of reference; at Sant Martí, it is the date of the church’s construction.

The towers also point to different chapters in the area’s history. Torre d’en Pega, also known as castell de Riells, was a smaller fortification of Castell de Montsoriu. It is a medieval house among the fields of Mas Can Pega on the edge of the municipality. Torre de Montfort was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It was a medieval watchtower that depended on Castell de Montsoriu. At an elevation of 734 metres, Torre de Montfort offers views over the valley of Riells del Montseny and the upper part of Arbúcies. Creu Monumental is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.

Events with different focuses

Marxa del Llop is a sporting event organised by Club Riells i Viabrea. The event on 15 March 2026 started and finished at the Poliesportiu Municipal de Riells i Viabrea. That edition featured two distances, 15 and 24 kilometres, in Parc Natural del Montseny.

Ecovita 2026 was the ninth Fira del Medi Ambient i la Sostenibilitat del Montseny. It took place from 27 to 29 March, with free admission, at Plaça de la Vila in Riells i Viabrea. On 27 March, the programme included scientific bird ringing at Riera de Sant Llop as an observation and environmental education activity. A presentation and guided tour of Casa Ecològica de Can Llop were planned for 29 March; transport was available on request. Marxa and Ecovita therefore represent different event formats: a sporting event with two routes and an environmental fair with observation and educational activities. If an event date shapes your travel plans, check the specific dates for the edition in question.
