Anyone looking for a hotel in Riudellots de la Selva can use the town’s history, river landscape and cultural offerings to plan their stay. Gothic architecture and local history take center stage; beyond the town, rivers, riverside vegetation and a variety of trails shape the landscape. The cultural program also has its own distinctive character. You can plan your trip around the themes that interest you most.

Local history and Gothic architecture

Riudellots de la Selva was relocated in the 15th century to avoid frequent flooding. This history provides a historical context for viewing the municipality today. In the town center, you will find Gothic portals, arches and lintels. The houses have largely retained their old appearance, so several architectural features together shape the character of the historic center.

Another Gothic building is the parish church of Sant Esteve de Riudellots, built between 1500 and 1565. The church and the historic details on the houses offer different points of focus: here, a single religious building with a clearly dated construction period; there, the preserved design of several houses in the town center. Together, they offer a glimpse into the town’s architectural history, which is not limited to a single building.

The Onyar, riverside vegetation and landscape

The Onyar is the main river in Riudellots de la Selva. Remnants of wetland vegetation still grow along the banks of the rivers and streams, including rushes, cattails and ash trees. These plants are part of the landscape around the waterways and distinguish the damp riverbanks from the fields and forests also found along the trails in the surrounding area.

The Camino del Onyar is about 19 kilometers long and reaches Riudellots de la Selva. The route passes through Mediterranean forests, the plains’ fields and riparian woodlands along the Onyar. These three landscape features give the route a varied character: woodland, open plains and the riverside. The distance is approximate; it describes the route, not the time it takes to walk.

Trails and pilgrimage routes

The Way of St. James also passes through Riudellots: pilgrims travel through the town into the La Selva region and continue toward Barcelona. The route branches off from Riudellots. One branch crosses the plain of La Selva toward Hostalric, while an alternative follows the Vía de Marina to the coast. This route makes Riudellots a notable point on the pilgrimage network described here. You can choose between the direction of Hostalric and the coastal alternative.

The municipality’s hiking and cycling routes offer another way to explore the area. In May 2025, the municipality presented official hiking and cycling routes. The program aimed to connect with neighboring municipalities via safe, accessible trails. As this was a route presentation at the time, it does not indicate the current condition of any individual trail.

Culture and events

The Casa de Cultura de Riudellots offers courses, workshops and talks in annual, quarterly or one-day formats. The program ranges from longer-running activities to one-off events; the events on offer may change. From September to June, the Casa de Cultura exhibition space presents a new solo or group exhibition on the first Friday of each month, unless that Friday is a public holiday. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit.

Riudellots also hosts FIPORC, an established fair on the calendar of Girona’s counties. It is dedicated to pork and products made from it. Its focus differs from the courses, talks and art exhibitions at the Casa de Cultura: this is a fair centered on a clearly defined product and subject area.

Getting around town

There are several bus stops in the town center, including on C. Estació and Av. Països Catalans. More stops are located outside the center: at the train station, in the industrial area, on the N-156 and on the N-II. Check current timetables and destinations before traveling. This lets you plan your journey around the stop that suits you, without inferring specific connections from the locations alone.
