Springs and landscape near Salitja
The Fonts de Salitja are a hydrological phenomenon. Springs and water outlets are connected to the base of VolcĂ de la Crosa and form the Riudevila stream. Beside the Capella de Nostra Senyora de les Fonts, a spring collects in a small basin that was restored in 1995.
The Les Fonts de Salitja recreation area has picnic tables. The Les Fonts de Salitja car park is one of the closest parking options for access to VolcĂ de la Crosa. In this way, the springs and the volcano are part of the local nature attractions both through their hydrological connection and via a named access point.
Archaeology and architectural history
Numerous storage pits were discovered beneath Salitja’s Plaça Major. The finds confirmed the importance of agricultural activity to the settlements that inhabited the Crosa. Also beneath Plaça Major, a bronze statue of the god Mercury, dating from the 1st century BC, was found in an Iberian trough. These finds link the history of the square with the earlier settlements and their agriculture.
The parish church of Santa Maria de Salitja has been documented since 1019. The present church building replaced a 13th-century building; the new church dates from the 18th century. Santa Maria has a rectangular floor plan and a polygonal apse. The surviving bell tower dates from 1598 and is topped with a pyramid. These dates represent different stages in the building’s history, not a single construction date for the church.
Festivals and music
The Aplec de les Fonts is a traditional gathering at the Nostra Senyora de les Fonts chapel, about one kilometre from the centre of Salitja. It takes place in the first week of September and includes a shared meal as well as cultural and religious activities. Salitja’s Festa Major takes place in August. Its programme includes activities for all age groups, including parades and performances for children.
The Concurs de la Cançó de Salitja also has a firm place in local cultural life: its tradition spans more than thirty years, and the competition is open to musicians and singers of all styles. The annual event details may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the dates and programme for that year’s edition before booking.
Local products and planning your stay
The Agrobotiga Mas Bes in Salitja sells its own and regional products. These include artisan ice cream, dairy products, honey, liqueurs, eggs, pastries and chocolate. Alongside culture and landscape, it adds a culinary dimension to a stay; it is a place where products are sold.
You can weigh the different themes in your travel plans according to your interests and dates: the springs and Volcà de la Crosa are associated with the waterscape, Santa Maria and the finds beneath Plaça Major tell the story of architectural and settlement history, and the festivals add seasonal highlights. This allows you to plan your stay in Salitja around the places and events that interest you most.
