Sant Pere Despuig: Hiking Routes, Church and Torre
Accommodation in Sant Pere Despuig
For a stay in Sant Pere Despuig, hiking routes and historic buildings offer different points of interest. The Ruta 3 Vall dels sentits follows a stream and leads to a bridge; the Route de les pairalies i cultius crosses a valley landscape surrounded by farmhouses and cultivated land. The church and Torre add history and distinctive landscape features to the routes.
Hiking along the stream and through the valley
The Ruta 3 Vall dels sentits starts at the church of Sant Pere Despuig and follows the Riera de Santa Llúcia to Pont de la Rovira. Along the marked route, it crosses small streams before reaching the bridge. The Gorga de Planagem, a bathing spot that can be used in summer, is also on the route. The stream, crossings and bridge are the main landmarks of this hike; the Gorga also offers the opportunity for seasonal swimming.
The Route de les pairalies i cultius offers a different landscape. It starts in Sant Pere Despuig and leads to Les Planes de Capsec. The paths take you into the fertile Vall de Capsec, surrounded by scattered farmhouses and cultivated land. Here, the valley, farmhouses and cultivation take centre stage. When choosing between the two routes based on their landscape features, you can use this distinction as a guide: the Ruta 3 follows the Riera and reaches Pont de la Rovira; the Route de les pairalies i cultius leads into the Vall de Capsec.
The church and Torre in the landscape
The church of Sant Pere Despuig stands on a hill in the small Cademunt mountain formation, in the middle of the Bianya plain. Its location connects the hill with the surrounding plain; the church was consecrated in 964. The year of its consecration provides a specific point of reference for the history of the place.
The Torre de Sant Pere is in the Sant Pere del Puig area, among cultivated fields. Despite later additions, it retains the appearance of a fortified house. It was built by Guillen de Corana at the end of the 15th century; this may have been after the Remences attacks. The church and the Torre therefore offer different historical points of reference: the church’s consecration is documented, while the Torre’s construction date is known, along with a possible connection to the attacks that should be treated with caution.
Getting there
You can reach the church from the C-153 via the road to Sant Martí de Solamal. The turnoff for the road up the hill is easy to find. For your journey, it is advisable to check current road conditions.
A road runs close to the Torre de Sant Pere. It branches off the C-26 near Hostalnou and rejoins it after Sant Martí de Solamal. When planning your journey, it is helpful to keep the routes to each site distinct: the described access road to the church is from the C-153; the road near the Torre rejoins the C-26. This helps you plan your journey according to your destination.
