Siurana combines a historic townscape with a landscape setting on the edge of the Alt Empordà floodplain. The oldest parts of the village lie in the streets around the Església de Santa Coloma; castle ruins, a former Romanesque church and a restored ice house add different historical traces to the picture. Other points of interest include the route through Baseia and culinary experiences: Siurana Ve de Gust offers guided farm visits, tastings and gastronomic workshops by prior reservation. This allows you to decide in advance whether local history, the landscape or a farm visit will be the focus of your stay.

Landscape and Location

Siurana d’Empordà lies on the western edge of the Alt Empordà floodplain, between the Fluvià and Muga river basins. The Ribera de Siurana crosses the municipality from west to east. This highlights two spatial contexts: the village’s position at the edge of the plain and the course of the waterway through the municipal area. The first describes the municipality’s location within the broader landscape, while the second traces the waterway within its boundaries. This distinction helps separate the landscape setting from the more narrowly defined historic centre.

Townscape and Historical Traces

The streets around the Església de Santa Coloma form the oldest part of Siurana and occupy the site of the former castle. The surviving remains of the Castell de Siurana are located around the church and are integrated into modern buildings. The castle traces and the built surroundings therefore meet directly in the townscape. The former Església de Santa Coloma de Siurana was probably a Romanesque building dating from the 12th or 13th century. A Gothic tombstone dating from 1330 is set beside the entrance. The two dates differ in their precision: the building is dated only approximately, while the tombstone bears a specific year. Those interested in the historic centre can consider the older layout and individual architectural details as two different scales of local history.

Ice House and Route through Baseia

The Pou de glaç at Mas Molí de la Ribera is another historic building: a well-preserved, circular domed ice house, restored in 2019. Its circular form and dome distinguish the ice house from the castle remains concentrated around the church and the traces of the former church building. The route passes through Baseia, a rural hamlet documented since 1067. Old building structures, architectural elements dating from the 15th to 17th centuries and visible medieval remains at Cal Robusto have been preserved there. Baseia adds a rural settlement to the historical themes and extends the view beyond the village centre.

Farm Visits and Pomegranate

Siurana Ve de Gust is an initiative by artisan producers and rural accommodations. It offers guided farm visits by prior reservation, with tastings and samplings of products, as well as gastronomic workshops. This gives you a clear framework for planning: the farm visit is guided and requires a reservation; tastings and workshops each have their own culinary focus. A description from 2021 identifies the Festa de la Magrana in Siurana as a festival that promotes eating pomegranates, which are typical in autumn. This places a visit that requires a reservation alongside a fruit-related autumn theme as two distinct culinary experiences.
