Susqueda: Reservoir, heritage and trails
Accommodation in Susqueda
Susqueda brings together several themes to consider when planning a trip: the reservoir in a wooded mountain landscape, heritage sites with clearly stated elevations, and trails for hiking or mountain biking. The places and routes below differ in their history, location and use.
Reservoir amid landscape and construction history
The Susqueda Reservoir lies in a wooded, mountainous landscape. Construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1967. The village of Susqueda, as well as land and farmsteads in the valleys of Susqueda and QuerĂłs, were flooded. The creation of the reservoir is therefore also part of the history of both valleys.
The Susqueda Dam is a double-curvature concrete arch dam with internal galleries, including the Sala de les Columnes. The double curvature describes the shape of the structure; the galleries are part of its interior design.
Heritage and notable elevations
Castell de Fornils is a Site of National Cultural Interest (BCIN). It stands at an elevation of 582 metres beside the Riera d’Om, at the foot of the Far escarpment. The escarpment is at 1,123 metres and marks the boundary between Les Guilleries, Collsacabra and Vall d’Hostoles. A signposted trail from Sant Martà Sacalm leads to the foot of Castell de Fornils.
The Mare de Déu del Far sanctuary can be reached on foot from Sant Martà Sacalm and from the Susqueda Reservoir. The PR222 is a signposted trail that follows the historic route from Sant Benet to El Far.
The Mare de Déu del Coll sanctuary stands at the pass connecting the Sant Benet and Sant Gregori massifs, which also marks the boundary between the municipal areas of Susqueda and Osor. The entire complex belongs to the municipality of Susqueda.
Trails for hiking and mountain biking
The CamĂ de Lleixa or de la Trona and the Ruta de les Roques encantades are routes for hiking and mountain biking in the mountainous surroundings of Susqueda. The climb from GolerĂł is also suitable for both activities. The CamĂ de Sant Jaume and the Ruta dels Pantans are other routes that can be explored on foot in Susqueda. You can choose based on whether you also want to consider mountain biking routes in addition to hiking.
Getting there and water-use information
A signposted turnoff from the C-63 near Pasteral leads along a paved track to the Susqueda Reservoir. The route from Sant MartĂ Sacalm to the reservoir is a forest track; four-wheel-drive vehicles or pickup trucks are recommended.
The municipal FAQ was updated on 29 November 2024. It recommends four-wheel-drive vehicles or pickup trucks for the forest track and states that motor-powered craft are not permitted on the reservoir. As access conditions may change, check the recommendation before travelling. Check locally whether the information about water use has changed in the meantime.
