Viladamat: History and Landscape
Accommodation in Viladamat
Viladamat lies on the alluvial plain on the right bank of the Fluvià. Roman remains, churches and the Puig Segalar viewpoint offer different highlights to consider when planning your trip.
Landscape and the route to Puig Segalar
A small mountain range separates the valleys of the Fluvià and the Ter. At 179 m above sea level, Puig Segalar is its highest point. From Viladamat, you can reach the viewpoint on foot or by bicycle along the route that passes through Sant Feliu de la Garriga. When planning, you can choose to walk or cycle; check current trail conditions before setting out.
Roman remains
The Roman villa of Tolegassos was active from the 1st to the 4th century and was finally abandoned in the mid-4th century. The archaeological site comprises a small Roman villa, two family necropolises and a brick kiln. These bring together different archaeological themes: life in a villa, burials and brickmaking. A Roman pottery kiln was also excavated southwest of Viladamat.
Churches and architectural features
Sant Feliu de la Garriga is documented from 1060. Despite later alterations, Santa Eulàlia de Palauborrell retains much of its original pre-Romanesque structure. Together, they offer two distinct historical references: a written record and surviving architectural fabric. Tolegassos’s Roman period of use predates the written record of Sant Feliu by several centuries.
The geometry of Sant Quirze de Viladamat can be described simply: its ground plan—that is, its shape when viewed from above—is rectangular; the church ends in a semicircle on the outside and a polygon on the inside. The remains of the Gothic palace of the Pabordia lie east of the church in Viladamat. Mas Falgós, also known as Can Masarac, has Gothic and Renaissance windows and a portal with voussoirs. According to the date on its portal’s keystone, Mas Escot dates to 1537 and has a quartered Renaissance window. Sant Quirze is characterized by its ground plan and contrasting terminations, while the windows and portal are the main features of the two mas houses. Near Palauborrell, about 200 m south of the church, stands a medieval ice house that was completely rebuilt in the 17th century.
Annual festivities and connections
Viladamat’s Festa Major is dedicated to Sant Feliu and takes place in early August; the smaller local festival is celebrated in December. Buses connect Viladamat with Figueres and l'Escala. If you plan to travel by bus, check the latest timetable details before your journey.
