Vilaür brings together a medieval historic centre, a layered architectural history and an extensive network of paths. On the edge of the Plana d’Empordà, agricultural land and pine forests shape the landscape. This makes historic architecture and routes on foot, by bike or on horseback distinct options when choosing a destination. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can consider whether to focus your stay more on local history or on the routes.

Historic Centre and Architectural History

The entrance gateway is part of the medieval historic centre: a short passage covered by a barrel vault, running through the lower part of a tower. This combination of passageway, tower and vault offers a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in historic settlement layouts.

The church of Sant Esteve de Vilaür represents a different period. Its history dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Its present-day appearance is that of a Romanesque building from the 12th and 13th centuries, which was extensively altered in the late Middle Ages and in later centuries. Around the 15th and 16th centuries, a fortification structure was added above the original church building, almost doubling the height of the building. The church thus brings together early origins, Romanesque form and later fortifications.

Can Puig offers a different architectural point of interest: the manor house dates from the 18th century and has preserved all of its outbuildings. While the gateway describes a single architectural feature of the historic centre, Can Puig centres on the manor house and its surviving outbuildings. Together, these sites offer different scales for exploring Vilaür’s architectural history.

Landscape and Routes

Vilaür lies on the edge of the Plana d’Empordà. The combination of agricultural land and pine forests gives the landscape its character. If you prefer not to define a destination solely by its buildings, you can consider this landscape alongside the town’s history when making your decision.

The extensive network of roads and paths provides a basis for planning routes on foot, by bike and on horseback. Two walking routes are described to help with a direct comparison of journey times: the Vilaür–Saus route takes one hour. A description of the “Ruta 149. Camallera, Saus, Vilaür i Llampaies”, published in 2024, estimates approximately 2.45 hours for experienced walkers without breaks. These times offer different planning benchmarks; for Ruta 149, hiking experience and taking no breaks are explicitly conditions for the stated duration. As route conditions may vary by season, check them locally before setting off.
