Vilaüt can be approached through two distinct themes: the water landscape at Estany de Vilaüt and the historic traces of Castell de Vilaüt. If you’re looking for hotels for a trip to Vilaüt, you can choose your focus based on whether you’re more interested in trails and landscapes or the area’s history. The circular walking trail, MTB route and remains of the fortress offer different ways to explore these themes.

Estany, Landscape and Observatory

The deepest part of the Estany de Vilaüt basin remains more or less permanently flooded. Two large cork oaks also grow near Vilaüt on a granite outcrop that is typical of this landscape. The trees provide a shady place to rest. The water conditions in the deepest area and a specific resting place beneath cork oaks are distinct features of the landscape.

Aguait de l’Estany was the first observatory built in Catalonia; it was established in 1983. It connects the theme of nature with a structure that has a clear date.

Circular Walk or MTB Route

The official Estany de Vilaüt circular walking trail is 2.8 km long. This gives you a specific distance to use when planning a walk. Dogs are subject to a clear restriction: they may be taken along only half of the trail around the Estany and must always be kept on a leash. If you’re travelling with a dog, check the park’s current guidance in advance and take the permitted section into account.

The Roses–Vilaüt MTB route reaches Estany de Vilaüt via a flat section with ponds and pastures. You therefore have two different options to consider when choosing between walking and cycling: a 2.8 km walk and a cycling route with a described stretch of landscape. Route conditions and signs may change; check them before setting out.

Fortress Remains and Vilaüt’s History

Castell de Vilaüt preserves the remains of a fortress. These include sections of the perimeter walls and the remains of a tower that may have been square or rectangular. The perimeter walls mark the fortress’s outer boundary, while two possible ground plans have been suggested for the tower. The Castell may have been a Roman villa beside the former Estany de Castelló.

A medieval document from 982 mentions Vilaüt among the small settlements. Fishing was a traditional economic activity and contributed to the development of the medieval hamlet. Several different historical references appear here: the possible Roman classification of the Castell, the document from 982 and the observatory built in 1983. This makes it possible to consider the possible interpretation of the fortress, the settlement’s history and the later construction of the observatory separately. Fishing adds an economic perspective to the historical picture.
