Vilobí D'onyar can be explored through three themes: the layout of its medieval town centre, the Volcà de la Crosa and landscapes along the Onyar. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between local history, geological features and paths through different landscapes. Local history and volcanic landscapes are themes in their own right, as are the paths along the river.

Local history and architecture

The historic centre preserves the layout of a medieval sagrera that was once fortified. This puts the form of the settlement at the centre of attention: the sagrera describes the structure of the town centre, not a single building. Its former fortifications are part of the historic context of the town centre.

The Ermita de Santa Margarida is a separate architectural landmark in Vilobí D'onyar. The chapel is rectangular, has a single nave and is in the Romanesque tradition. This distinguishes two different scales of cultural interest: the medieval structure of the town centre and the form of an individual religious building.

The Volcà de la Crosa and Les Guilloteres

The Volcà de la Crosa has a 1,250-metre-wide crater with a distinctive C shape. This unusual form defines the area's geological focus. Les Guilloteres is also part of it: once a site where volcanic aggregates were extracted, it has now been converted into an interpretation centre about the Volcà de la Crosa.

For getting your bearings on site, Les Guilloteres has a car park and a viewpoint. From there, you can see the crater of the Volcà de la Crosa to the southeast, as well as forests and cultivated land to the north and west. The viewpoint offers two perspectives on the landscape: the volcanic crater and the surrounding land.

The Volta al Volcà is the official 5 km circular route around the Volcà de la Crosa. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk, and there are five geological points of interest along the route. If you are interested in volcanic landscapes, this route gives you both an approximate walking time and geological stops along the way.

Walks along the Onyar

The Itinerari Ruta de l’Onyar is an easy walk through Vilobí D'onyar. It follows fields and the banks of the Onyar to the Resclosa d’en Borra, passing the recreational area on the Onyar along the way. Its route and named stops give it a clear connection to the river and the landscape along its banks.

The Camino del Onyar is an approximately 19-kilometre route through Mediterranean forests, the plain's farmland and riverside forests along the Onyar. By comparison, the Volta al Volcà is defined above all by its 5 km length, circular form and geological points of interest, and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk. The Ruta de l’Onyar can be identified by its route and named destination, while the Camino is described by its approximate length and three landscape types. This lets you compare the routes by their individual focus, rather than treating them as alike.

Getting your bearings and getting there

Girona-Costa Brava International Airport is in Vilobí D'onyar. The town is also connected to Girona by the N-II and GI-533 roads. The airport's location within the municipality and the two road connections to Girona offer different points of reference for planning your trip, placing the town between air and road links.

There are several specific interests to consider when choosing a destination: a medieval town layout, a Romanesque chapel, volcanic geology or paths along the Onyar. The routes also have different focuses—from the geological points of interest at the Volcà de la Crosa to the fields and riverside forests along the river.
