Olius appeals to travellers who want to combine architecture and archaeology on a cultural trip. The main highlights are the church of Sant Esteve d’Olius, the modernist cemetery of Olius and a fortified Iberian grain store. Together, they reveal different aspects of the area: an 11th-century church, distinctive cemetery design and evidence of the food-storage practices of an Iberian community. If you choose Olius as your destination, you can consider these highlights separately when planning your trip while also working out how to get there and arrange your visits.

Church of Sant Esteve d’Olius

Sant Esteve d’Olius is an important work of 11th-century architecture in Solsonès. The new church was consecrated in 1079 by Bernat Guillem, Bishop of Urgell. It was built from the foundations at the behest of Count Ermengol d’Urgell and the people of Olius. A crypt lies beneath the raised presbytery. The year of consecration dates the church, while the crypt’s position beneath the presbytery also draws attention to the building’s spatial layout.

Modernist cemetery and design

The modernist cemetery of Olius makes its own architectural statement. Its irregular layout follows the terrain, and natural stone shapes the design of the graves. When you look around the site, two scales come into view: the shape of the overall layout and the materials used for the individual graves. This offers a perspective on cemetery architecture distinct from the church’s building history.

Iberian grain store

At the Iberian archaeological site of Sant Esteve d’Olius, a fortified grain store was excavated between 1998 and 2007. The site’s specialised economic activity is interpreted as the storage and management of grain surpluses for trade. Botanical remains point mainly to hulled barley and free-threshing wheat. Alongside the architectural themes, this adds an economic perspective and identifies specific grain varieties. The interpretation links storage with trade, without presenting it as a confirmed scene from everyday life.

Guided route and visit planning

The guided cultural route “Olius Monumental” takes visitors through the monumental complex of Sant Esteve d’Olius. It includes a guided tour, admission and a visit to the church of Sant Esteve d’Olius and the modernist cemetery of Olius. Along the route, visitors can also learn about an Iberian silo field and how it worked. The route thus combines visits to the church and cemetery with an introduction to the archaeological site.
