Arnés: Natural Areas, Routes and Historical Heritage
Accommodation in Arnés
Arnés brings together several distinct themes for visitors: the landscape of the Parc Natural dels Ports, historic buildings, and specific excursions and routes. You can organise your stay around your own interests, focusing on natural areas, architecture, or a named excursion destination.
Natural Areas and Natural Heritage
The 2025 municipal figure puts the share of Arnés’s municipal area within the Parc Natural dels Ports at 63.5 percent. El Pimpoll offers a different perspective: this tree in the Els Ports natural area has been designated a monumental tree by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Together, they represent different aspects of natural heritage: the protected area’s share of the municipality and the special status of a specific tree. If you are planning your trip around nature, you can consider these perspectives separately: the protected area’s share of the municipality and the distinctive status of an individual tree.
Historic Buildings and Their History
The historic complex of Arnés was declared a cultural asset of national interest in the “historic complex” category by the Generalitat de Catalunya on 20 January 1992. The parish church of Santa Magdalena is Baroque and was built in 1693 over the ruins of a Gothic church. The building brings together a Baroque church and the remains of an earlier Gothic structure. If you are interested in architectural history, you can distinguish two different building phases in one place.
The Povet de la Neu tells a different story of construction and use: it is a circular stone ice house dating from the 17th to 18th centuries. Several information panels explain how it worked. Unlike the parish church, this building is a storage structure whose former function takes centre stage. The hermitage of Santa Madrona can, in turn, be described by its architectural layout. It consists of a single rectangular nave, a three-sided polygonal apse, and a gallery. The nave forms the main space, the apse its three-sided end, and the gallery a raised level within the church.
Arnés also has a Gothic castle at the intersection of Carrer Onze de Setembre and Carrer Major. Together with the parish church and the hermitage, it offers a comparison of different architectural forms: the castle is described as Gothic, while the parish church is Baroque and Santa Madrona is characterised by its spatial layout. The specific street intersection identifies the castle’s location within Arnés.
Excursions and Routes
From Arnés, you can take excursions to the Estrets d’Arnes. Another excursion follows an easy path from the recreation area on the Algars River near Arnés, close to the hermitage of Santa Madrona, to the small La Palanca reservoir. Swimming is permitted in the reservoir. The two destinations therefore have different stated highlights: at La Palanca, the walk leads to a place where you can swim, while the Estrets d’Arnes is an excursion destination reached from Arnés.
The literary route “Les bruixes d’Arnes” offers another theme to explore. It is inspired by David Martí’s novel of the same name. Its point of reference is therefore a literary work, rather than a particular architectural style or a place to swim. If you would like to include literature among your travel interests, alongside nature and architecture, this route adds a distinct option to the other excursions and heritage themes.
