Solivella: Culture, Routes and Festivals
Accommodation in Solivella
Solivella lies on a natural route between Andorra and the beaches of the Costa Daurada, as well as between Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges. These two monasteries are among the three great monasteries of La Ruta del Cister. A variant of this route also passes through the town: variant 6 of the GR 175 runs through Solivella. Routes, architectural history, murals and recurring festivals give you different points of reference to help you decide how the town fits into your trip.
Routes and landscape
The Camino del Tallat runs along the ridge in some sections and along the southern slope of the Serra del Tallat in others. You can travel it on foot or by mountain bike. The route description thus includes both its two types of terrain and the two activities mentioned.
Various hiking and mountain biking routes also start from Solivella and pass through agricultural landscapes. Features mentioned along the way include dry-stone huts, historic paths and viewpoints offering far-reaching views across the comarca. The Camino del Tallat focuses on the ridge and southern slope; the hiking and mountain biking routes starting from Solivella combine their landscape description with agricultural land, historic paths and expansive views. If you are comparing routes, these details offer concrete points of reference for landscape and activity, without assuming any particular walking time or difficulty level.
Architectural history and art in the town
The present-day parish church, Església de l'Assumpció de la Mare de Déu, is in the Baroque style. It was built in 1769 using stones from the earlier church. The construction date and reused material point to two aspects of its architectural history: the building of the present church and its connection to the previous one.
Walls and other traces remain from the Castell dels Llorac. They are remnants of a castle built by the Llorac in the Catalan Flamboyant Gothic style; it dates from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The castle courtyard contains the cistern, which was used as Solivella’s water reservoir and still serves this purpose today. The Castell dels Llorac is part of the Museu Comarcal de la Conca de Barberà (MCCB).
Art in the streets complements these architectural landmarks: the Ruta dels Murals adorns the streets of Solivella with large-scale artworks. The architectural history of the church and castle thus sits alongside another form of cultural expression in the townscape, spread throughout the streets.
Festivals throughout the year
The Festa del Sagrat Cor is celebrated in Solivella on 9 September. The Consell Comarcal de la Conca de Barberà has declared it a festival of regional interest. The Festa Major takes place around 15 August in honour of the Mare de Déu d’Agost. These two traditions offer different points of reference in the annual calendar: the Festa Major in August and the Festa del Sagrat Cor in September.
If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the exact dates of the Festa Major and the programme for the Festa del Sagrat Cor each year. When choosing your travel dates, you can consider the festival dates alongside the routes and cultural attractions that also distinguish Solivella.
