Extremadura brings together impressive natural areas and traces of different eras. In the southeast of the province of Cáceres, the UNESCO Global Geopark Villuercas-Ibores-Jara covers 2,544 square kilometers. Roman heritage, religious architecture, hiking trails and regional cheese experiences also shape the possibilities for a trip around the region.

Geopark, protected areas and landscapes

At 1,601 meters, Risco de La Villuerca is the highest point in the Geopark. It is also a geosite and a geological educational trail; from here, panoramic views open up over the area’s distinctive Appalachian relief. Travelers interested in the geology of the area will find a tangible starting point for planning their trip here. Visits to Castañar de Ibor Cave are possible only with advance reservations for nature conservation reasons. Check the current booking arrangements before making plans.

The cross-border Tagus/Tajo International Biosphere Reserve is shared between Spain and Portugal. It is suitable for birdwatching; species found there include the Spanish imperial eagle, black stork, cinereous vulture, griffon vulture, golden eagle, Egyptian vulture and Eurasian eagle-owl. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. When planning nature-watching activities, it is therefore worth taking the time of year into account.

Different landscapes can also be found in other protected areas. The 150-hectare Moheda Alta peri-urban protected area and leisure park includes dehesas, cereal fields, pastureland, olive groves, riparian forests, reservoirs, rivers and streams. Between Cáceres and Badajoz lies the ZEPA Arrozales de Palazuelo y Guadalperales, whose waterbird life is internationally significant. Large reservoirs shape the landscape of the La Siberia extremeña Biosphere Reserve; it has beaches and natural swimming pools, as well as forests, pastures, dehesas and olive groves.

Activities in La Siberia extremeña range from hiking and cycling to boat trips and 4×4 routes, as well as birdwatching, astrotourism, mushroom picking and climbing. The specific activities available may depend on operators and seasonal conditions. One of Extremadura’s Vías Verdes passes through landscapes of holm and cork oaks, where several birds of prey can be spotted, among other species.

Roman heritage and architecture

The Mérida Archaeological Ensemble dates back to 25 BC, when Augustus founded the colony of Augusta Emerita. Another striking structure is the Roman Bridge of Alcántara. It was completed around 106 AD, has six arches, and measures 194 meters long and eight meters wide. Its maximum height is 71 meters. These figures give a clear sense of the structure’s scale and make its dimensions easier to imagine in person.

In Cáceres, the Torre del Bujaco is the best-known of around 30 towers dating from the Muslim period. The Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe combines religious significance with architecture spanning around six centuries. It remains a pilgrimage center for the Western world and Latin America. The two places offer different ways to experience cultural heritage: the towers of Cáceres’ urban history and the religious architectural ensemble in Guadalupe.

Hiking trails, swimming pools and cheese culture

In terms of trail length, options range from a 2.5-kilometer path to the natural swimming pools of Los Pilones to the signposted 16-kilometer circular route at Garganta de los Infiernos. The shorter path starts at the nature reserve interpretation center and is suitable for all age groups; swimming conditions may vary seasonally. The circular route is estimated to take around six hours. Weather and trail conditions can affect walking time. These different distances and times can help you plan your day according to how much time you have and how far you want to walk.

On the Ruta del Queso, visits to farms and cheese producers can offer insights into the origins and production of cheese and may include tastings of regional varieties. Depending on the experience, activities may also include herding animals, milking goats or sheep, and making cheese; individual offerings may vary. Torta del Casar is highlighted as one of Spain’s most sought-after cheeses. For lovers of regional cuisine, this culinary focus complements the nature and cultural experiences.

The Boda Regia also brings together history and regional tradition: in August, a historical event is re-enacted in Valencia de Alcántara and the Portuguese town of Marvão. The event is recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Extremadura. Check the event dates before your trip. For a scenic drive through the landscape, the EX-208 runs from Villarreal de San Carlos, past the section near Arroyo de la Vid, to the gates of Monfragüe National Park, a Biosphere Reserve. Check road conditions before setting off.

When choosing a hotel location, start by deciding which experiences you want to shape your trip. Travelers primarily interested in Mérida’s archaeological heritage will have different priorities from those who want to focus on hiking, birdwatching or swimming pools.
