Hiking among sierras, dehesas and steppe

The official tourism service of Cabeza Del Buey offers planned hiking routes in the surrounding area. The routes pass through sierras, dehesas and the Extremaduran steppe. This means that a variety of landscape types feature among the hiking options around the town.

The Senda del Valle del Aliso starts within the town. It includes a circular hike of about 15 kilometres as well as a linear option of about 9 kilometres. This lets you compare the approximate distance and route type: the circular hike is longer, while the linear route is shorter. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Another activity is offered by Centro Ecuestre «Entrevarales», which provides horseback rides in nature. Check booking and operating conditions in advance.

Architectural history in Cabeza Del Buey and the surrounding area

The small chapel now known as Ermita de San Roque was built by the Knights Templar in 1240, in the 13th century, and is considered the oldest historic building in Cabeza Del Buey. La Posada, also known as Casa de la Audiencia, offers a different example of historic architecture: the building stands in the old town next to the town hall. Its features include a three-storey stone tower, a large wrought-iron grille, and a Renaissance window with a double arch and balcony on the upper floor.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Armentera is also known as La Divina Pastora. Its Gothic and Renaissance portals stand alongside a tower topped with glazed amphorae. The history of the Convento de Concepcionistas Franciscanas dates back to the early 16th century: Martín Rol founded the convent, whose construction began in 1518. It was consecrated on 31 May 1523. The building includes an entrance with a dressed-stone arch and a small chapel with worked stone features; a bust of Christ from the Mena school has also been preserved. Check in advance whether the interior is accessible.

The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Belén is 11 kilometres from Cabeza Del Buey. It is listed in the Monument category as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) and includes a Romanesque Templar cloister and a Baroque church. The remains of a Roman thermal complex at Puerto de la Nava are also located near Cabeza Del Buey. The archaeological site lies east of the Arroyo del Mojón, a tributary of the Río Zújar. Check local access conditions for visits to the sanctuary and the remains.

Nature, exhibitions and local experiences

The Centro de Interpretación de la Pintura Rupestre de Extremadura has exhibition spaces devoted to rock art in general and, in particular, the schematic rock art of Extremadura. The topics combine an exploration of rock art with a regional focus. The Aula de la Naturaleza in the former schools of La Nava is also dedicated to nature: it is used for its study and observation and features photographs, information panels and audiovisual rooms. Check the opening arrangements of both facilities before visiting.

Cabeza Del Buey Municipal Park includes a children’s recreation area, sports facilities, leisure and quiet areas, and spaces for events. The park therefore offers a range of areas for different uses. Another distinct experience is the Gastroexperiencia Quesos Reborto, which includes a visit to a cave, an explanation of the cheese-maturing process, and a tasting of five cheeses with a drink. Check booking requirements and availability in advance.

The area around Castillo de Almorchón is associated with seasonal crane watching. In December and January, around 4,000 cranes are said to fly over the castle in the morning and evening; numbers and sightings vary from year to year. The timing is therefore clearly associated with the winter months, although sightings may differ each year.
