Alcántara combines striking cultural heritage with a landscape along the Tagus. The Puente de Alcántara, the historic old town and the Tajo Internacional offer different points of interest when planning a hotel stay. The buildings, nature and event dates can help you decide what to focus on.

Bridge, fortifications and old town

The Puente de Alcántara dates from the 2nd century AD and has six round arches. In the middle is an arch erected in honour of Emperor Trajan. The bridge thus combines a clear historical context with distinctive architectural features.

The Arco de la Concepción is the only surviving gate of the second line of fortifications and leads into the historic old town. It marks both a surviving element of the fortifications and the transition into the older part of the town. The Jewish Quarter lies around the La Soledad Synagogue, which was built in the 14th century.

The Conventual de San Benito can also be identified by a distinctive architectural feature: its eastern façade has the three-storey Galería de Carlos V. The Iglesia de Santa María de Almocóvar houses five panels by Luis de Morales. Visitors interested in architecture and art will find different aspects of Alcántara’s cultural heritage here.

The Menhir del Cabezo bears engravings and was re-erected in 2015. Another chapter in the history of the order concerns the construction of a new building: the royal privilege for it was granted at the beginning of the 16th century. The building was intended as the main headquarters and seat of the Order of Alcántara.

Nature along the Tagus and walking routes

The Tajo Internacional has been designated a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) since 2000. It provides a habitat for a significant community of birds of prey, including Egyptian vultures, Spanish imperial eagles and cinereous vultures. The rocky shores of La Cantera reservoir are nesting sites for black storks, vultures and Egyptian vultures.

At the Centro de Interpretación Tajo Internacional, the flora and fauna of the nature park are presented through display panels, projections and new technologies. The centre offers a way to learn about the landscape’s plant and animal life.

The Mirador de la Presa is beside the dam above the Tagus and also offers a view of the Puente de Alcántara. La Cantera is an artificial lake fed by spring water that is suitable for swimming. As seasonal conditions can vary, check local conditions before visiting.

The Ruta Puente Romano de Alcántara is a circular route that starts and ends at the Puente Romana de Alcántara. Trail conditions and signage may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

Events and travel planning

The Fiesta de la Mormentera in June includes tastings and workshops about an Arabic-inspired sweet with Jewish influences. The Festival de Teatro Clásico de Alcántara takes place in the first week of August. Check the specific event dates and programme before your trip.

If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Alcántara, it helps to decide what to focus on: will your trip centre mainly on the bridge and old town, nature along the Tagus, or an event?
