Discover Berzocana
Accommodation in Berzocana
Berzocana brings together prehistoric rock art and natural and cultural attractions: a challenging route to the rock paintings, the trail network of Parque Sierra de Berzocana, an archaeological interpretation centre and the Church of San Juan Bautista. These attractions offer different points of interest—from an outdoor hike to exhibitions, architectural history and local traditions. They can help you plan your stay around what interests you most in Berzocana.
Nature and trails around Berzocana
Parque Sierra de Berzocana is a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Geosite within the Geopark. Its trail network includes up to five recommended routes. There is also the Roble de la Nava oak, listed among Extremadura’s outstanding trees since 2004. If you plan to visit the tree, it is worth checking its current condition beforehand.
One specific hike leads to the rock paintings at Canchos de las Sábanas. The Ruta a las pinturas rupestres de Berzocana starts on the CC-22.4 road between Solana and Berzocana, about two kilometres from Berzocana. It leads to three rock shelters with paintings. The route is short but challenging: as well as steep inclines, there are sections with loose stones. The first part follows a well-maintained farm track through a mixed forest of Pyrenean oaks, cork oaks and chestnut trees. Plan this as a separate hike and check current trail conditions before setting off.
Rock art and archaeological insights
The three rock shelters along the route form part of a larger group of sites in the municipality of Berzocana. This also includes Risquillo de Paulino. The paintings are attributed to the period from the Chalcolithic to the Bronze Age and dated to approximately 4000–1000 BC. This places the hike to the three rock shelters in a broader archaeological context.
The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn de la ArqueologĂa del Geoparque displays archaeological remains from all historical periods. The exhibits include a replica of the gold torcs and grave goods; there is also a reconstructed cave with a video about rock paintings. The visit therefore focuses not only on prehistoric rock art but also on other periods of the region’s archaeology.
Church and architectural history
The Church of San Juan Bautista is a Gothic religious building dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its main façade is distinguished by a Mudéjar tower—a striking combination of different architectural influences. The Capilla de los Santos houses the relics of San Fulgencio and Santa Florentina. In 1977, the church was declared a national historic monument of national interest.
Festivals and local produce
During the Fiesta del Ramo, a ceremonial procession carries images of Santa Florentina and San Fulgencio, as well as the reliquary. The evening Ofertorio takes place in Plaza Mayor, where attendees bid on the offerings. In some years, and when the weather is suitable, the Fiesta de la ApariciĂłn includes a procession to Cruz de los Santos, at the foot of Olivo de los Santos. Mass is followed by a family gathering with chocolate and churros. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates in advance; the weather conditions for the Fiesta de la ApariciĂłn procession should also be taken into account.
The Feria Sabores del Geoparque showcases cheese, cured meats, honey and jams. This adds a perspective on regional produce to the archaeological and architectural themes, without implying that tastings or a specific event programme are available.
Practical information
The Ruta a las Cuevas starts in Plaza de Berzocana. By car, take the road towards Solana and then a signposted track to Casa Rural Finca de la Sierra. Road conditions can change, so check them before driving. Together with the challenging route to the rock paintings, this information offers a practical starting point for planning, but does not replace checking local conditions at the time.
