Casas de Miravete lies near the southeastern boundary of Monfragüe National Park and on the slopes of the Sierra de Miravete. There are different ways to plan your trip: hiking trails to the summit or through the surrounding area, cycling routes, and the GeoCentro Monfragüe. The landscape and places connected to the town’s history also shape your stay. The trails vary in length and route; checking the information for each one can help you choose a suitable excursion for your plans.

Landscapes and views around Casas de Miravete

The Sierra de Miravete is characterized by cork oaks, holm oaks, and Mediterranean scrubland. From Pico Miravete, when visibility is good, the view extends north to the Sierra de Gredos and west to Monfragüe National Park. This brings two different landscapes into view: the Sierra de Gredos to the north and the national park to the west.

If you are interested in birdwatching, the Ruta del Buitre Negro offers opportunities to observe griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, cinereous vultures, booted eagles, short-toed snake eagles, and golden eagles. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Another route leads from Casas de Miravete to the Pantano de Zamarro. Along the way are stone livestock shelters and centuries-old cork oaks; the route also passes picnic areas and offers a viewpoint overlooking the reservoir. Livestock-keeping conditions and access may vary.

Hiking trails with different route details

The PR-CC 64 La Piñuela starts in Casas de Miravete, opposite the GeoCentro Monfragüe. It is an 11.4-kilometer circular route that passes through Era de los Santos, a site interpreted for stargazing. Before setting out, check the current access and trail-signage conditions, as well as the route details.

Another hike leads from Casas de Miravete to the summit of Pico Miravete. The well-marked trail is approximately four kilometers long and takes about an hour and a half on foot. These approximate details refer to the route to the summit and should not be confused with the 11.4-kilometer PR-CC 64 circular route. Check the signage and trail conditions again before setting out.

A circular route from Casas de Miravete to Puerto de Miravete is also described. On the return, it follows the Cañada Real Leonesa Occidental for 1.5 kilometers. Check the trail conditions for this route and, if you need drinking water along the way, check its availability.

Cycling on routes in the Biosphere Reserve

Casas de Miravete lies on two mountain biking routes in the cycling network of the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve: Routes 7 and 8. In addition, La Raña, a 28.4-kilometer out-and-back cycling route, starts in Casas de Miravete. This distance applies to La Raña, not to Routes 7 and 8. Check the route again before cycling; surface conditions can change seasonally.

La Raña follows the Cañada Real del Puerto de Miravete to Las Ventas. The site is described as a geological enclave and a strategic crossroads of historic routes. In addition to its length, the named route connects the cycling trip to the area’s old paths and geology.

The GeoCentro and places connected to local history

The GeoCentro Monfragüe serves as a tourist information center and provides maps and visitor information. Its permanent exhibition covers Monfragüe, the geological formation of the region, rocks, minerals, flora, and fauna. Check current opening hours and access arrangements before your visit. For groups that book in advance, the GeoCentro organizes rock art workshops using natural pigments. If you are planning a group visit, arrange it in advance.

Places to visit in Casas de Miravete include the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the remains of Castillo de Miravete. Check access locally. Fuerte Colbert and Fuerte Senarmont were part of the French defense system protecting the crossing over the Sierra de Miravete. Both are now in ruins; their sites offer views of the surrounding area.
