El Torno offers a range of options to help you plan your trip: a viewpoint with sweeping views, historic buildings, hiking trails and a natural swimming spot. The memorial sites and the Church of Virgen de la Piedad also give the town its own cultural identity. Deciding which of these interests matters most to you can help shape your stay.

Mirador de la Memoria and Memorial Events

From Mirador de la Memoria, you can see across the Jerte Valley and the Sierra de Tormantos. The viewpoint has a picnic area and an information board about the nearby El Cerro climbing area. Sculptures by Francisco Cedenilla commemorate those forgotten after the Spanish Civil War; they were installed in 2008. The views, memorial and information give the site several distinct purposes.

Memorial events for victims and those persecuted under Francoism and during the Spanish Civil War are held at the viewpoint. One of these commemorations is dedicated to the guerrilla fighters who defended the mountains of the Jerte Valley, and takes place on the first Sunday in October. If you would like to plan your trip around this memorial event, check the date for the year in question.

Stone Huts and Hiking Trails

Around a hundred stone huts, some several centuries old, stand in the area around El Torno. They once provided shelter for shepherds, goatherds and farmers; today they are considered a picturesque attraction in the town. Their former use offers a glimpse into rural working life, while their construction draws attention to traditional dry-stone building techniques.

The PR-CC 7 linear hiking trail passes through cherry orchards, grazing land and traditional dry-stone structures, including chozos, majadas and enclosures. It starts at Fuente el Regajo in El Torno and ends at Canchal del Maqui. The route is rated as moderately difficult: 8.3 kilometres each way, 16.6 kilometres in total, with an estimated duration of five hours and 15 minutes. These details give you a concrete basis for deciding how to fit the hike into your travel plans.

The PR-CC 8 Garganta La Puria – Arroyo Labradillo is laid out differently: it is a 12.55-kilometre circular route. Its description follows Arroyo Labradillo, passes a viewpoint and continues through oak groves and meadows towards El Torno. This gives you two different types of route to choose from: PR-CC 7 is linear, with an estimated duration and a moderate difficulty rating, while PR-CC 8 is a circular route. Check the route conditions before setting out.

Swimming Spot and Architecture

Piscina Natural Los Pozos is in the Hoya de las Canales gorge, also known as Garganta del Lugar. From El Torno, you can reach it by road in the direction of Cabezabellosa; from the car park, a path of about 100 metres leads to the natural swimming spot. This short distance can help you find your way there, and you can include the swimming spot as a separate natural attraction in your plans.

The Iglesia Ntra. Sª Virgen de la Piedad is also one of El Torno’s notable heritage sites. The church was built in the mid-16th century. Inside is a Hispano-Flemish carving of the Virgin of Mercy from the 15th century. The church and the carving date from different centuries, making it another point of interest for travellers interested in the town’s history and art.
