Discover Gata: Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Gata
If you’re looking for a hotel in Gata, your travel interests can help you choose the right focus for your stay. Church art, historic buildings, recurring festivals and natural sites each give your visit a different character. You can explore these places and events on their own terms: from the history of San Pedro Church to summer festival traditions and the natural area along the Río San Blas.
Church Art and Historic Buildings
The parish of San Pedro was already in existence in 1257. In 1410, a general chapter of the Order of Alcántara was held in the church. These two dates illustrate different aspects of local history: the early history of the parish and a specific meeting of the order at San Pedro.
The church’s works of art also date from different periods. Pedro de Paz created the main altarpiece between 1550 and 1560. The paintings on the main altarpiece are by Pedro de Córdoba and were completed between 1605 and 1609. These details refer to different works and periods of creation; together, they offer a glimpse into the church’s artistic furnishings.
The Ermita del Humilladero brings together works from several periods: it contains an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece, a sculpture of the Crucified Christ created by Pedro de Paz in 1593, and murals depicting the Last Supper that date approximately to the late 16th century. The distinction matters when placing them in time: the murals and sculpture belong to the 16th century, while the altarpiece was created later.
The Torre de la Almenara is a five-sided tower made of stone and lime. A coat of arms of Charles I is another feature of the cultural heritage. The historic town of Gata is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest. These different features—the architectural form, coat of arms and cultural designation—each offer their own point of reference for understanding the area’s historic heritage.
Landscape and Natural Sites
The Ermita de San Blas stands high in the Sierra, surrounded by chestnut trees. Its elevation offers wide-ranging views. This makes it a place to take in a landscape quite different from the works of art and architectural features found in the town.
A natural bathing area with clean river water lies on the Río San Blas. It has toilets, restaurants and parking. Check whether these facilities are available before your visit; bathing conditions may vary seasonally. This lets you include the bathing area in your travel plans with realistic expectations, without assuming that conditions will be the same on every visit.
The Puente de la Huerta Nature Interpretation Centre includes a museum room and an arboretum with around 45 tree species from the five continents. The museum room and the variety of trees offer different points of interest: alongside nature, the focus here is also on interpreting it. The approximate number and origins of the species make the arboretum a distinctive nature attraction in Gata.
The Botanical Garden of Gata is associated with a bibliographic reference dating to around 1815. It also describes a well-preserved specimen standing 11 metres tall, with a base circumference of 5.97 metres. These two details complement each other without saying the same thing: the reference places the garden in a historical record, while the measurements illustrate the size of the specimen described.
Festivals and Recurring Dates
The feast of Santiago Apóstol is celebrated in Gata every year on 25 July. It includes a garlic market in the main square and a tasting of Vino de Pitarra. The market and tasting bring together a specific central location and a local festival tradition. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, its fixed date is a useful guide.
The pilgrimage to San Blas follows a different schedule: it takes place on the second Sunday in August. Participants climb up into the Sierra on foot or on horseback. For travel planning, it is useful to distinguish between the fixed annual date of the Santiago Apóstol festival and the pilgrimage’s Sunday-based date. Both traditions are part of the annual calendar in Gata, but each has its own date and activities.
