Grimaldo combines architectural history with a section of the Vía de la Plata Way of St James. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can decide whether to focus on the historic buildings or plan the stage towards Galisteo. The Castillo and parish church tell the story of the town; the route profile provides distance, time and elevation figures for a specific section. Grimaldo is also one kilometre from the road to Holguera.

Castillo de Grimaldo and Parish Church

Only the large keep of the Castillo de Grimaldo remains. It has three vaulted floors; surviving features also include a cistern and heraldic depictions. The Castillo is classified as a medieval palace castle and as a late seigneurial fortress. These classifications emphasise different aspects: its character as a palace and its defensive role as a seigneurial fortress. The Castillo is privately owned and cannot be visited. Check access arrangements before your trip.

The parish church of the Immaculate Conception, a Gothic religious building, stands directly beside the keep. According to a historical architectural account, it was built with stones that had fallen from the castle tower. In this way, the building history of the two structures is also linked through the materials used. Festivals listed for Grimaldo include the Fiestas de San José and the Romería de la Inmaculada. If you’d like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the event dates in advance.

The Vía de la Plata Stage

The Grimaldo–Galisteo route is listed as Stage 6 of the Vía de la Plata Way of St James. It is 19.8 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of three hours and 40 minutes. The elevation profile includes a maximum altitude of 482 metres and a minimum altitude of 245 metres. The ascent is listed as 148 metres, and the descent as 337 metres. Based on these elevation figures, the descent is considerably greater than the ascent. The distance and estimated duration help you plan how long the section will take; the elevation figures add a picture of how the ascent and descent are distributed.

Monastery Ruins and Historic Route Connections

The ruins of the former Franciscan monastery of La Moheda lie about three kilometres from Grimaldo. Surviving elements include paintings, reliefs and decorative architectural details. The site is in poor condition, but its remaining details still offer concrete clues to its artistic and architectural history. La Moheda thus adds a nearby monastic site to the picture of Grimaldo’s buildings.

Another historical point of interest is the former Franciscan monastery of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. It lies between Grimaldo and Mirabel, near a branch of the Roman road that ran from the ford of Alconétar via Cañaveral to Casas de Millán. At La Moheda, the focus is on the ruins and their surviving paintings, reliefs and architectural elements; at Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, the historical location in relation to the named places and the route of the road is the focus. Together, the two monastic sites offer different perspectives on the history of the surrounding area.
