Guijo de Santa Bárbara lies in steep, rugged mountain terrain and offers views of the Garganta de Jaranda. Hiking trails, natural swimming pools and local culture give your trip a range of different focuses. When planning, it is worth considering the requirements of each excursion separately from seasonal conditions.

Mountain Trails and Historic Routes

The Ruta del Trabuquete is a 12-kilometre hike of moderate to high difficulty. It connects Guijo de Santa Bárbara with Portillo de Jaranda, following the course of the Garganta Jaranda. The details about distance and difficulty help you assess the hike; trail conditions may change.

The Ruta del Refugio de las Nieves leads to the Refugio de la Virgen de las Nieves, described as Extremadura’s highest-altitude religious building. The route also connects with the Camino de Castilla. This old route was used for transhumance and food trading with the neighbouring province of Ávila. This stretch of trail therefore brings together mountain scenery and a historic connection between the provinces.

Natural Swimming Pools Along the Garganta Jaranda

In summer, the pools along the Garganta Jaranda become natural swimming pools. Water levels and safety conditions may vary. Information about the individual spots also differs: From Guijo de Santa Bárbara, a roughly three-kilometre trail along the Garganta de Jaranda leads to Charco del Trabuquete. Charco Calajomero can be reached on foot from the upper part of the village in about 20 minutes, with very little change in elevation; trail conditions may vary.

Charco de la Máquina is another natural swimming pool on the Garganta Jaranda near Guijo de Santa Bárbara. It is located a few metres from the road between Guijo and Jarandilla de la Vera. The distance and time details refer to different places and access points, so they cannot be compared as a single walking time. If you are planning a swim, keep seasonal water and trail conditions in mind.

Church, Architecture and Local History

The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro was built in the 18th century. Its features include a carved figure of Santa Bárbara, a Mudejar-style ceiling and mantles embroidered in honour of Santa Bárbara. Traditional houses can be found in Barrio Viriato, on Calle de la Iglesia and at Plaza de D. Antonio. Together, the church and houses offer a glimpse of different forms of local architecture.

The surviving Lavadero público, a traditional washhouse, once served as a meeting place for the women of Guijo de Santa Bárbara. The Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva Regional de Caza “La Sierra” is a public cultural building owned by the Government of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura) and publicly administered. Its displays cover the geography, vegetation and wildlife of the protected area, with a particular focus on the Iberian ibex.

Artisanal Products

At C/ Carretera Nueva 18, Sabores del Guijo - Casa Alonso produces natural, artisanal liqueurs, jams, quince paste, fruit vinegars and fruit syrups. The individual products may change. The products offer a further glimpse into local production; no tasting, tour or workshop is included.

Festivals in August and December

The Fiestas Virgen de las Nieves on 5 August include a pilgrimage from Guijo de Santa Bárbara to the mountain refuge of the same name and the traditional descent to Charco del Trabuquete. During the Fiestas de Agosto, traditional Vaquillas take place in the local bullring on 14 and 15 August. The Plaza is a stone enclosure used for this tradition during the festivities in mid-August.

December also has its own traditions: The Fiestas Patronales de Santa Bárbara feature dancers, a procession on 4 December, Buñuelos and “Flores” served with chocolate, music, liqueurs and dancing. Los Campanillos takes place on 7 December, with a procession of bells through Guijo de Santa Bárbara. This tradition attracts locals and tourists every year. As with recurring festivals, the specific programme may vary; if you are travelling for a particular date, check the event details.
