Madrigal de la Vera: Natural Pools, Trails and Traditions
Accommodation in Madrigal De La Vera
Madrigal de la Vera combines a distinctive waterscape with hiking trails, historic buildings and recurring festivals. The Garganta de Alardos, the Ruta de Romartín and local traditions offer different starting points for planning a trip: you can focus on nature, architectural history or the events calendar.
Natural Pools and Scenery at the Garganta de Alardos
The Garganta de Alardos is a group of natural pools in the municipality of Madrigal de la Vera. Well-known bathing spots include Los Maquis, La Caldera, El Rubioso, La Paloma, El Negro, El Cardenillo and La Piscina, also known as Puente Viejo. Conditions in the individual pools can vary depending on the season. The riverbank landscape is also part of the gorge’s character: alders and ash trees line the Garganta, which flows into the Río Tiétar.
The Ruta de Romartín on Foot, by Bike or on Horseback
The Ruta de Romartín, PR-CC 82, is an 11-kilometre, easy circular route. It is designated for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. Landmarks along the route include the Fuente del Cabrero as the starting point, as well as the Puente Romano, a natural pool and the Fuentes de Alardos, which the trail passes.
The trail first passes through a large avenue of alders, then through scrubland with rockrose, lavender, heather and occasional junipers. Along the way, views extend to rocky peaks, the Rosarito Reservoir and across the Río Tiétar valley. The route alternates between wooded sections, open scrubland and far-reaching views. Signage and access conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Puente Romano and the Town’s Buildings
The Puente Romano, also known as Puente Viejo, is part of the Roman road linking Plasencia with Puerto del Pico and Ávila. From the bridge, there are views across the Sierra de Gredos and the Río Tiétar valley. The stone structure rises high above the waters of the Garganta de Alardos; currently, at least one large arch is visible, along with a bricked-up opening at the side.
The parish church of Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is considered a monument of historical interest. On its Epistle side is a portal with a basket-handle arch, framed by decorative bosses and small Gothic columns. Inside, the church houses a stone baptismal font dating from the 16th century. These details give the church its own architectural significance and, alongside the prominent bridge, offer another way to explore Madrigal’s architectural history.
Squares, a Fountain and Local History
The central square is considered the town’s most typical and best-preserved square; the Fuente de los Perales is nearby. The Fuente de los 6 caños, a traditional fountain, stands in Plaza Machadero. Before piped water was introduced, it was a meeting place for local residents. The two fountains reflect different aspects of local life: one is situated near the central square, while the other once served a communal purpose.
Festivals and Traditional Culture
EnTREVECINOS/AS is an annual folk culture festival in Madrigal de la Vera, usually held on the first weekend of June. The festival includes participatory workshops on castanets, percussion and jotas. Food routes and tastings featuring products from La Vera, including cheese and Pitarra wine, are also part of the programme. The usual date can help with trip planning; check the specific event dates for the year you wish to visit.
Another festival date is the Fiesta de las Luminarias on the evening of 7 December. Residents gather around large fires set up throughout the town to celebrate the Immaculate Conception. Tastings of products from the traditional slaughter season, as well as typical jotas from La Vera, which are sung and danced, are part of the tradition. The Fiestas del Cristo Chico take place on the first weekend of August, with musical performances and activities; the programme may vary from year to year.
The Procesión del Encuentro also features in the festive calendar: it takes place in Madrigal de la Vera on the night of Holy Saturday and is one of the highlights of the celebrations during this period. Together, these dates offer different seasonal occasions to plan around—from the first weekend of June and the August festival to the fires in early December and Holy Week. If you are travelling for a particular festival, check its specific dates and programme.
