Pinofranqueado between the river and hiking trails
Accommodation in Pinofranqueado
For your stay in Pinofranqueado, riverside walks, longer routes, and cultural highlights can be sorted by walking distance and interest. A paved path runs alongside the river; other trails lead to a waterfall, petroglyphs, or remarkable trees. The area also offers historic buildings, La Enramá, and traditional slate houses.
River and riverside walk
The natural swimming pool on the Río Los Ángeles is 370 meters long and an average of 32 meters wide. The Paseo del río de Pinofranqueado runs for 850 meters along the river. It is paved and has a maximum gradient of two percent; the path is suitable for families and older visitors. Check the condition of the riverside walk before your visit.
Routes by distance and destination
The 3.8-kilometer circular trail to Chorritero de Ovejuela is considered an easy family walk and suitable for all age groups. There is a rest area with a viewpoint along the way, overlooking small bends in the river. The circular route to Tesito de los Cuchillos is shorter, at 2.6 kilometers. It starts in Castillo, is easy, and has only a slight gradient. The two circular routes therefore differ not only in their destinations but also in their stated lengths.
The petroglyphs of Tesito de los Cuchillos lie in a bend of the Río Esperabán, where it meets the Zambrana stream. The swords depicted on the rock may date from the Bronze Age, between 1100 and 700 BC. This cautious dating is part of the site's interest: it is a possible interpretation, not a definitive date.
Another hike leads to Despoblado del Moral and starts in Horcajo. The easy, well-maintained dirt path is about two kilometers each way. This distance refers to the one-way route. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out; for Chorritero, also check access conditions, and for the route from Horcajo, confirm vehicle access conditions in advance.
Trees and landscape
The route to Madroñera de Guijarro Blanco passes through pine forest, chestnut groves, holm oaks, strawberry trees, and scrubland. The strawberry tree species Arbutus unedo L.is considered monumental. It is ten meters tall and has a circumference of 4.70 meters. The large Madroñera de Guijarroblanco in El Castillo is designated an “Árbol Singular.”
Buildings and traditions
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encina was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. Its main altarpiece dates from the 18th century. Traditional architecture in Pinofranqueado includes slate-stone houses with slate roofs. A visit therefore brings both a specific architectural feature and the building style of the houses into view.
La Enramá takes place on the last Sunday in August and is classified as a festival of regional tourist interest. The custom temporarily pairs unmarried young men and women. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.
Honey in Ovejuela
The Honey Interpretation Center in Ovejuela is housed in a former olive oil mill. Exhibitions showcase honey and the processes involved in producing it. The visitor experience also includes a small tasting of different varieties of honey. This insight into honey production complements the region's trails, buildings, and archaeological sites.
