Highlights of Santiago De Alcántara include the rock paintings in Cueva del Buraco, megalithic culture and signposted trails in the natural landscape of Tajo Internacional. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping the different route distances and seasonal conditions in mind.

Rock art and megalithic heritage

Cueva del Buraco contains schematic rock paintings that are more than 5,000 years old, on the quartzite of Sierra de Santiago. There are 25 motifs in total. Most are headless anthropomorphic figures with bent arms, along with bars and dots. These motifs give rock art a specific focus that you can explore as you learn about the area's prehistory.

Another site with rock paintings is Peña Grajera, where six anthropomorphic figures can be found. Access depends on the water level of the Rivera Aurela; Peña Grajera is accessible only when the river is dry or has little water. The El Buraco megalithic route leads to a natural viewpoint next to Castro Cabeza de Buey. It is seven kilometres long and starts at the Ermita de San Cristóbal.

The Ermita de San Cristóbal also has practical visitor facilities: picnic areas, barbecue grills and drinking water. The Dolmen Culture Interpretation Centre presents the region's megalithic significance through reconstructions, models, panels and videos. Alongside the rock art, visitors can learn about the forms of dolmen culture and how they are presented.

The El Péndere Nature Interpretation Centre is located in the 13th-century Ermita de El Péndere. Its exhibitions and audiovisual materials cover the landscapes, ecosystems, flora and fauna of Tajo Internacional. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. There are also nine signposted trails in the municipality and surrounding area.

Routes and nature in Tajo Internacional

The signposted Senda Verde runs through the Parque Natural del Tajo Internacional from Santiago De Alcántara to Cedillo. The El Buraco megalithic route is another option, at seven kilometres. The Ruta de la Geregosa is described as a 14.6-kilometre out-and-back route and takes approximately three hours and 20 minutes. The estimated duration of the Ruta de la Geregosa can help you plan your time; El Buraco is seven kilometres long, and the Senda Verde runs from Santiago De Alcántara to Cedillo.

The Ruta de la Geregosa runs from the El Péndere Centre to Fuente de la Geregosa on the Tajo and back. It connects the area of regional interest of Sierra de San Pedro with Parque Natural Tajo Internacional. Along the route, there are opportunities to spot large birds of prey and black storks. A viewpoint along the route offers views of the Tajo and its Portuguese bank. Spring conditions can affect the experience.

Timing also matters when observing wildlife: at Mirador de las Viñas, you can watch the deer rut at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Its exact timing varies from year to year. To protect biodiversity, visits to the relevant stretch of the Tajo are permitted from 1 August to 15 January; the route heads upriver towards Santiago De Alcántara. Check this seasonal rule again before your visit.

History and events

The town's artistic heritage includes the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, dating from the 16th to 17th centuries. Another historical trace is the connection between Eras de Ulloa and a Roman settlement near the Rivera Aurela, where gold was sought. Santiago De Alcántara's patron saint festivities are dedicated to Santísimo Cristo de las Batallas and take place from 31 August to 3 September.

La Frenda is a cultural celebration held every August that recalls a historic wedding procession through the town. Its 15th edition took place in August 2026. If you are planning your visit around a celebration, keep its specific dates in mind. For nature and cultural sites with expressly stated access conditions, it is advisable to check the relevant rules before setting out.
