Zarza La Mayor: Heritage and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Zarza La Mayor
Zarza la Mayor combines a long architectural history with a local tradition and walking trails that differ in length and route. This offers several perspectives when planning your trip: you can focus on historic buildings and their architectural details, or compare the trails and their destinations. Zarza la Mayor is also one of the municipalities in the Tajo-Tejo International Biosphere Reserve.
Building History and Architecture
The Palacio de la Encomienda dates from the 14th century. The Iglesia de San Andrés dates from the 16th century; Pedro de Ybarra, Juan Bravo, and Alonso Hernández Acosta were involved in the last rebuilding of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Andrés in the 17th century. Inside are several Baroque altarpieces. Two of them date from the 18th century and stand on the Gospel side. This chronology distinguishes the church’s building history from its Baroque interior.
The Fuente Conceja also makes a distinctive architectural statement: it has a large pointed arch and two round arches on its sides. It is classified as a Monument as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Castillo de Peñafiel, also known as Racha-Rachel, is a former Muslim fortress. The earliest remains date from the 9th century; visible remains include a fortification built in the 16th century with two defensive rings.
A different aspect of the town’s history is shown by the former Fábrica de la Seda, which now houses Zarza la Mayor’s town hall. The former factory building and its current municipal use thus represent two different chapters in local history.
Domingo de los Tiros
Domingo de los Tiros is a local tradition celebrated every Easter Sunday since the 18th century. Since Easter is a movable feast, it does not fall on the same calendar date every year. Domingo de los Tiros was awarded the designation “Fiesta de InterĂ©s TurĂstico de Extremadura”; the official announcement appeared on June 29, 2026.
During the Reverencia, the statues meet in the street and bow to one another up to three times; at the same time, shots are fired from shotguns. Conditions for participating and observing may vary. If this event determines your travel dates, plan around Easter Sunday each year.
Comparing Two Walking Routes
The Ruta del Contrabando Transfronteriza is an easy 15 km out-and-back walk. It runs from Zarza la Mayor’s town hall to Salvaterra do Extremo in neighboring Portugal. The route follows historic paths along which coffee was smuggled across the Spanish-Portuguese border. The walk therefore combines a cross-border destination with the history of smuggling.
By contrast, the Ruta del Montón de Trigo is a linear 8.8 km route from Zarza la Mayor to the Erjas River, with a low difficulty level. Its first section follows the Cañada Real de Gata through an area characterized by stone walls and pastureland. Along the route, a metal footbridge provides access to a viewpoint overlooking the Erjas. The difference is therefore not just the distance, but also the route type and destination: an out-and-back walk to Portugal versus a linear route to the river. Check local conditions for both routes before setting out.
Landscape and Visitor Information
Along the Alagón River, the Canchos de Ramiro landscape forms the boundary of the municipality of Zarza la Mayor. The Tajo-Tejo International visitor center network also includes the “La Encomienda de Peñafiel” Interpretation Center in Zarza la Mayor. Check current opening hours before your visit.
