Valdoviño: Lagoon, Coast and Surfing History
Accommodation in Valdoviño
Valdoviño combines coastal scenery and a lagoon with trails, surfing history and seasonal events. The features below give you concrete points to consider when choosing your destination.
Lagoon, Beach and Trails
The approximately 3 km-long A Frouxeira Beach borders a lagoon on one side and cliffs on the other. Valdoviño Beach and Lagoon together form a protected natural area known as “Espacio Natural en Régimen de Protección General”. The approximate beach length gives you a sense of the scale of the coastline; the protected status applies to the beach and lagoon as a whole.
An unpaved path runs along the eastern shore of the Frouxeira Lagoon, with a birdwatching station and information panels. Observation and information are therefore among the specific features of this stretch of shore. Another option is the Senda da Lagoa da Frouxeira: this flat, linear trail is approximately 2.4 km long and runs between the small beach at Frouxeira and the area around the AC-116. Its length, route type and endpoints can help you consider this trail as a distinct option when planning your trip.
Surfing History and Events
Pantín–O Rodo is considered an outstanding surfing destination in Galicia. The Pantín Classic has been held on a beach in Valdoviño since 1988. It takes place from late August to the first week of September; the exact dates may vary from one edition to the next. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant edition.
The Baixada das Carrilanas de San Mamede is also a seasonal point of reference: it takes place in August and has been held more than twenty times. When choosing your travel dates, distinguish this event from the later-season Pantín Classic. For both events, the specific dates for the year in question are decisive.
The Océano Surf Museo opened in December 2017 and is Spain’s first museum dedicated to surfing. It presents the history of surfing in Galicia from its beginnings to the present day. Texts, plans, illustrations, original items, photographs and audiovisual media explore the subject in a variety of formats. The museum adds a historical perspective to the surf events, so you need not plan your trip solely around an event date.
Heritage and Viewpoints
The ancient settlement of Castro de A Frouxeira dates back to the Iron Age and is located on a strategic headland. From there, you can enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coastline. The Igrexa de Santa Eulalia de Valdoviño is an eclectic-style church. From the hill where it stands, the coastal panorama takes in A Frouxeira Beach and Lagoon. This gives you two distinct viewpoints over the coastal landscape: the Castro headland and the church hill.
The Faro de Punta Frouxeira also offers clearly defined views in two directions: to the northeast, you can see Praia and A Frouxeira Lagoon; to the southwest, the cliffs and Ermita do Porto. These specific points of interest may be more useful when planning your trip than a general list of attractions.
Reservoir and Activities
The As Forcadas Reservoir offers another focal point. Introductory courses in dinghy sailing and canoeing are held annually on its calm waters in summer; the programme may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around a course, check the dates for the relevant year. The “As Forcadas” Club Náutico has facilities for storing boats and a jetty that provides access to the reservoir from the parish of Vilaboa.
You can explore Valdoviño through a range of interests: coastal trails and the lagoon, surfing history and seasonal dates, heritage with named viewpoints, or activities at the reservoir.
