Bertamiráns: Routes, Heritage and Landscape
Accommodation in Bertamiráns
There are several ways to get to know Bertamiráns during your stay: by following routes through the surrounding area, visiting cultural venues and exploring the landscape of the A Maía Valley. The Senda Verde connects Bertamiráns with O Milladoiro; circular route 8M passes through green spaces and starts and ends at Pazo da Peregrina. There is also an auditorium with a performing arts programme, festivals and a traditional street market. You can plan which of these aspects will shape your trip based on your interests and specific dates.
Routes with different itineraries
The Senda Verde is a 12 km linear route of moderate difficulty connecting O Milladoiro and Bertamiráns. There are several points along the route where you can join or leave it. This is useful to know when planning if you are considering travelling between the two places or covering part of the route. The route follows paths and new forest tracks through areas of notable heritage and landscape value.
The urban circular route 8M follows a different itinerary: it passes through Bertamiráns’ green spaces and starts and ends at Pazo da Peregrina. This distinguishes two different types of route. The Senda Verde connects two town centres and has several points where you can join or leave it; the 8M is a circular route with the same starting and finishing point. To choose a route, you can first consider whether the connection between Bertamiráns and O Milladoiro or a loop around Bertamiráns better suits your plans.
Pazo da Peregrina and cultural venues
Pazo da Peregrina is a complex comprising a main house, agricultural outbuildings, a chapel and a garden. It is used as a venue for exhibitions, weddings and other events. The pazo is also associated with Rosalía de Castro and her paternal family. This association indicates a historical connection; it does not mean that Rosalía de Castro lived or stayed there.
The Auditorio de Bertamiráns is also part of the town’s cultural offering. It is affiliated with the Rede Galega de Teatros e Auditorios and offers a regular performing arts programme. If a performance is important to your trip, check the programme for your planned dates. This lets you include a specific cultural event in your plans without confusing it with the programme described as ongoing.
Festivals and weekly market
The “Ames en Festas” programme brings together the Madalena and Peregrina festivals in a joint ten-day celebration in Bertamiráns and Milladoiro. In 2026, both places celebrated their respective local festivals together for the fifth consecutive year. This timing is important when planning a trip: the joint programme described here and the 2026 celebration are not a promise of future dates. Check the event dates if you would like to plan your trip around a festival.
The traditional street market in Bertamiráns takes place on Saturday afternoons. On 27 May 2026, the municipality reported that, in addition to clothing and household goods, the market offered cured meats, churros, vegetables and fruit. Market hours and arrangements may change, and the product range can vary too. Check the details before your visit if the market is to be a fixed part of your plans.
The A Maía Valley and the area around the Sar
The A Maía Valley is close to the centre of Bertamiráns and is considered one of the most scenic areas in Ames. It is a river valley with riparian woodlands and land used for arable farming and grazing. These areas are evidence of the traditional agricultural system. Both the river landscape and agricultural land use are therefore among the valley’s defining features.
The area around the Sar is designated a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and is included in the Natura 2000 network. Together with the A Maía Valley, it offers a second perspective on the landscape: the valley is defined by its form and land use, while the Sar area is defined by its designation within the protected-area network. If you are considering Bertamiráns as a destination, its routes, cultural events and landscape offer different starting points for planning your trip.
