Brión: Discover culture and hiking trails
Accommodation in Brión
You can plan a trip to Brión around specific cultural sites and hiking trails. The buildings vary in their history and architecture, while the routes differ in how you can travel them, which stretches of river they follow, and where they start and end. If you’re looking for a hotel in Brión, these themes can help you decide what you’d like to focus on during your trip.
Historic buildings
The Torres de Altamira fortress stands on the strategically located site of a castro necropolis and dates back to the 9th century. It had six towers, living quarters for the owners and servants, and a chapel dedicated to the Three Kings. The towers represent the defensive part of the complex, the living quarters reflect the lives of its residents, and the chapel represents its religious aspect.
The oldest parts of the Pazo de Trasouteiro may date back to the 14th century. The pazo was later remodeled several times, particularly in the 17th century. It therefore combines a possible early date with several later renovations.
The Santuario de Santa Minia is located in the center of Pedrouzos. This large, unfinished rectangular building is made of granite and features Baroque architectural and decorative elements. Its shape, material, and stylistic features give a clear impression of the building’s architecture.
Churches and the Romaría de Santa Minia
Work has been carried out on the Igrexa de San Xiao de Bastavales since 1768. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and it has a single nave. The church faces west so that the towers of Santiago Cathedral can be seen from the main entrance. Its floor plan and orientation can be considered together: one describes the church’s layout, while the other relates to the view of Santiago.
The Romaría de Santa Minia in Brión takes place every year on September 27. It features musical performances, food, and a range of sociocultural activities. If you’d like to plan your trip around this annual date, check the program for the relevant year.
Hiking trails and how to find your way
As Pegadas de Rosalía is a cultural trail connecting Santiago de Compostela, Ames, Brión, Padrón, and Dodro. You can travel it by bus, on foot, or by bicycle. The route therefore offers several ways to get around, while the towns listed show that it extends beyond Brión.
The Santo Arandel hiking route starts and ends at the same place: the Carballeira do Santo Arandel. The historical hiking route follows a different course. It starts at the Igrexa de San Xulián de Luaña and ends at the Igrexa de Santa María de Ons. This gives you a clear distinction for planning: one route has the same start and end point, while the other uses two churches as waypoints.
One hiking route follows the Río Traba between the Ponte dos Carros and the Ponte da Igrexa. At the Río Sar, the section reached is included in the Natura 2000 network as a specially protected area and forms part of the LIC Sistema fluvial Ulla-Deza.
