Cerdido: Waterfalls, River Mills and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Cerdido
Those who choose Cerdido for a trip can shape their stay around its natural landscapes and cultural attractions. The waterfalls vary in their river courses, forms and described access routes. There is also a Neogothic church, an archaeological find and an annual folklore festival. The details below can help you choose the highlights that best suit your visit.
Waterfalls and River Courses
The Fervenza do RĂo Mestas is on the RĂo Mestas. Rapids alternate with small waterfalls there; the largest drop is about two metres high. A route description from 2021 places the access point on a path beside the road between Cerdido and Cedeira, before the bridge over the river.
The Fervenza de Carballeiro is on the RĂo Pontellas, next to the Bouza mill, and drops about ten metres. On the way to Cerdido, a path on the right-hand side of the road leads to the mill; the waterfall is beside it. According to a 2021 route description, the access is not signposted. The comparison with the RĂo Mestas gives a concrete sense of the difference between the two waterfalls: there, the largest drop is about two metres high; here, the drop is about ten metres.
The Fervenza do Forte is on a short, deeply cut section of the RĂo Pombeiro, also known as Porto do Cabo, shortly before it joins the Pontellas. This section has several rapids and waterfalls. According to a 2021 route description, the access to this cascade is also not signposted.
The Fervenza dos MuĂños de Chao is on the Porto do Cabo stream, which flows into the RĂo Mestas. The 2021 route description follows the river from the mill after crossing the bridge, as far as a small weir. At the Fervenza do Rego de Loureiro, the water comes from the Loureiro stream, a small tributary of the RĂo Mera, which flows into the RĂa de Ortigueira. The described route leads from the village of Loureiro towards Agreste, then left after a few houses to a livestock farm and from there cross-country to the river. The route details for the waterfalls date from 2021; check them before your visit.
Valley, River Mills and Fishing
The RĂo das Mestas valley is one of Cerdido’s most important tourist attractions for its scenery. Numerous river mills in good condition have been preserved near the mouth of the RĂo das Mestas. The valley and mills add another dimension to the water theme beyond the individual waterfalls: here, the focus is on a landscape and its preserved milling heritage.
Fishing is also mentioned as an activity in Cerdido’s rivers and mountains. Check the local rules and conditions before fishing.
Church, Archaeology and Folklore
The immediate surroundings of the Igrexa Parroquial de San Martiño de Cerdido can be reached by car or bus. This information refers to the area around the church. The Igrexa San Antón A Barqueira is a Neogothic church dating from 1920, with a cruciform floor plan. “Neogothic” describes its architectural style, while the cruciform floor plan describes the layout of the church building.
A gold torc was found at Castro de Cerdido in 1840. Its style is very similar to Irish goldsmithing. The year refers to the find; the comparison refers to the style of the piece of jewellery. The Festival-Concurso FolclĂłrico Concello de Cerdido is held annually. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
