Discover Coristanco through its remarkably diverse landscapes and heritage: megalithic and Iron Age traces, churches from several periods, the history of the potato, as well as wetlands and waterfalls. When planning your trip, you can focus on one theme or combine culture and nature. Each place represents a distinct theme—from architectural details to paths along waterways.

Megalithic traces and architectural history

The Dolmen de Chan da Embarrada is one of Coristanco’s oldest surviving heritage sites and an example of megalithic architecture. The Castro de Oca, an Iron Age settlement, represents a different form of habitation. Together, the two sites illustrate different aspects of early history: megalithic architecture in one case, and an Iron Age settlement in the other.

Other historical layers can be distinguished in the religious buildings. The Ermida de Santa Ana da Rabadeira is a Romanesque parish church from the 12th century, later altered in the Baroque style and again in the 19th century. By contrast, the Capela da Milagrosa in Cereixa was inaugurated in 1943 on the site of the former parish church. At Santa Ana, the architectural style and later alterations are the main points of interest; the Capela da Milagrosa is notable for its inauguration at the former church site.

Smaller architectural details also offer clues for a visit focused on architecture. The Capela do Rosario das Salgueiras has a rectangular floor plan, a single nave and a pitched roof covered with curved ceramic tiles. The Pazo de Nogueira is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. In Lubiáns, the structure features four semicircular arches over the Rosende. These different features offer concrete ways to distinguish architectural forms and heritage significance.

Potato culture and artistic expression

The potato is a distinct cultural touchstone in Coristanco. The Museo da Pataca brings together agricultural heritage and artistic expression, alongside a striking mural by the artist Mon Devane. Agriculture and art are thus both in focus, rather than the visit being devoted solely to the history of a product.

The Festa da Pataca offers a different focus: it is a cultural and social celebration in honour of potatoes from Coristanco. Compared with the museum, the festival foregrounds the social dimension of this theme. If you are interested in local potato culture, you can distinguish between its connection with art and its place in a community celebration.

Wetland, night sky and waterfalls

The Lagoa de Alcaián in Seavia is a wetland of high ecological value. Another natural attraction is the Miradoiro de Estrelas at the Lagoa de Fontecova in Cuns, which is intended for observing the night sky. The two places appeal to different interests: one is defined by its wetland, the other by its views of the sky.

You can see the Fervenzas de Verdes waterfalls via the Ruta de los molinos de Verdes walking trail. Access from the Refugio de pesca de Verdes is easy and signposted. As signposting can change, check the directions on site.

To reach the Fervenzas da Burbia ou do Río Grelo, follow the directions from Bustelo: drive past greenhouses, then park and walk down from there to the river and the mills. Trail conditions can change; check the directions before your visit. This keeps the plan for this route tied to the stated starting point and sequence.
