Esteiro: Carrilanas tradition, beach and routes
Accommodation in Esteiro
Several distinct travel themes come together in Esteiro: the Carrilanas tradition, Playa de Esteiro in the centre, the riverside promenade along the RĂo Maior and the route to Pedra do Cadro. Its history spans a local event that began in 1988 and a building from the early modern period. You can choose to focus on festival culture, local history or a named route.
Carrilanas and local history
The Gran Prix de Carrilanas de Esteiro race began in 1988, following a local discussion about reviving the patron saint celebrations for Santa Mariña de Esteiro. In 2021, it was recognised as a festival of national tourist interest. The carpenters of Esteiro are described as the real inspiration for the Carrilanas event.
Carrilanas are wooden vehicles with wooden wheels covered in rubber. They roll downhill on slopes under the force of gravity. At the Gran Prix, the Carrilanas tradition is considered a gravity-powered sport in which mechanical innovations and imaginative designs play an important role. The tradition therefore focuses both on how the vehicles work and on their technical and design aspects.
The Festival das Carrilanas is a music event organised by A.D.C. Esteirana de Carrilanas. It was created to bring Galician music and local bands to Esteiro, and introduces music from Galicia to a wide audience. Specific line-ups vary. If you plan to travel for a particular musical offering, check the programme for your dates.
The Chapel of Santa Mariña de Esteiro in Solleiros is a building from the early modern period, dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Its history therefore reaches much further back than the Carrilanas race, which began in 1988. Esteiro's cultural history brings together a building and a more recent festival tradition from different periods.
Beach, waterfront and route
Playa de Esteiro (Muros) is located in the centre of Esteiro, away from the national road.
The Paseo MarĂtimo de Esteiro runs through the centre of the parish of Esteiro in Muros and alongside the RĂo Maior. At the mouth of the RĂo Maior, you can go for a walk and see boats.
The Ruta Pedra do Cadro can be walked as a linear route or a circular loop; from Esteiro, it reaches Pedra do Cadro after just over 6 km. Its dirt tracks have some waymarkers, whose condition can change, so it is a good idea to check for current information before setting out. In the context of the route, Pedra da PĂa is another striking granite formation. The distinction is clear when choosing between them: the Paseo MarĂtimo is defined by its course through the parish centre and along the RĂo Maior, while the Ruta offers a choice between a linear route and a loop, with its distance and destination to consider.
