If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Neaño, you can choose where to stay based on specific route and cultural connections. Route 6 crosses the town centre and leads to the Muíño de Rellán; at the same time, the plaza, architectural traces and cultural institutions shape the themes that distinguish Neaño. The following points of reference will help you understand the town’s different facets.

Townscape and Landscape

The older buildings are in the higher part of the settlement, while newer buildings have developed around the Ponteceso-Laxe road. From the town centre, Monte Branco can be seen on the horizon; the mountain rises from the waters of the Ensenada de la Insua. This brings together two ways of orienting yourself: the distribution of older and newer buildings, and the view across the landscape from the centre. The settlement pattern and the view of Monte Branco offer different points of reference for the townscape.

Route 6 and Mill-Building Heritage

Route 6 is called “De Neaño ás Torres do Allo por Cesullas” and crosses the town centre of Neaño. It leads to the centuries-old hydraulic mill structure, Muíño de Rellán. The route thus connects its path through the town with a specific destination of architectural and technological history. The mill has a vertical waterwheel, described as the largest in the whole of Bergantiños. Its hydraulic design and vertical wheel give the mill a technological aspect, while its age also makes it a historic structure.

The Plaza and Community Life

The new Plaza de Neaño has become a focal point for the social and cultural development of Cabana de Bergantiños. During the patron saint festival, it serves as a meeting place for residents and families attending the celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The plaza’s longer-term role in community life and its recurring connection with the patron saint festival are thus both important.

History and Literature

The remains of the former Salón de Baile de Neaño survive in Neaño. The town’s past was also shaped by numerous smithies. The Salón stands as a single architectural remnant of a specific place, while the smithies point to a broader influence on the town’s past.

The folk poet María Baña Varela settled in Neaño and founded her family home there with her husband, Xusto Cousillas Castro. She dedicated a poem to the Igrexa do Carme in Neaño. Her connection to the town can thus be understood both through the family home and through her literary dedication to the church.

Cultural Venues and Their Locations

The Museo del Lino, which belongs to the Asociación Cultural O Fol, is located in the basement of the O Sabelo restaurant in Neaño. The Museo Arqueolóxico Municipal is in the Casa da Cultura Neaño. The Centro de Interpretación da Natureza (CIN) is located on Rúa do Río. If you are planning an indoor visit, check current access arrangements in advance.
