Ortigueira: History, Coast and Culture
Accommodation in Ortigueira
There are several ways to focus your trip to Ortigueira: historic architecture in Santa Marta de Ortigueira, a reconstructed windmill, the Bordo Litoral da RĂa de Ortigueira 2 route, and cultural and food events. If you are looking for a hotel in Ortigueira, you can first decide whether historic sites, nature and leisure stops, or an event date should be the focus of your stay. This lets you explore the destination based on specific interests, rather than reducing your stay to a single theme.
Monastery Complex and Town History
The Antigo Conxunto Conventual in Santa Marta de Ortigueira covers 5,000 m². Today, it consists of the parish church, the municipal offices and the Teatro da Beneficencia. The former monastery buildings were arranged on two levels around a central cloister; in 1835, they were taken from the Dominicans. The complex can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: its current components serve different purposes, while the cloister and the layout across two levels describe its former monastic structure.
The Teatro da Beneficencia opened in 1850, after local residents converted former monastery storerooms into a cultural venue. Following the 1835 confiscation, its opening marked a later stage in the history of the monastery complex's use.
Rúa Real-Cantóns is the historic commercial center of Santa Marta de Ortigueira. Its stately buildings feature granite details, wrought-iron balconies and white galleries. The street’s former commercial role offers a different way to approach the town’s history than the transformation of the monastery complex; the balconies and galleries also bring its architectural character to life.
Windmill and Coastal Route
The MuĂño de Vento do Campo da Torre also tells the story of the practical use of a historic building. The windmill still has two millstones: one for wheat and one for corn. It was faithfully reconstructed in 2005 and can once again operate as it did in the past. The two distinct milling purposes add a specific detail about the mill’s function and the grinding of different grains.
The Bordo Litoral da RĂa de Ortigueira 2 route offers a different focus. Its points of interest include birdwatching towers, designated bathing areas, Laguna de San Martiño, the dune strip of Playa de Morouzos-Cabalar, and San Vicente Island.
While the monastery complex and windmill bring architectural and practical history into focus, the route brings together birdwatching, designated bathing areas and coastal landscapes. This gives you different themes to choose from for your trip: historic architecture and craftsmanship, or nature and leisure stops.
Events and Regional Cuisine
The Festival Internacional Mundo Celta de Ortigueira has been held since 1978. Another annual occasion is Entroido pastry day, which features Orejas, Bolas Freixós and Pestiños, followed by a public tasting in Santa Marta.
The Xornadas GastronĂłmicas also add to the culinary offerings. Recent editions have featured tastings, stalls selling locally produced honey, craft stalls and hands-on workshops. Alongside the three named pastries and the public tasting at Entroido, the Xornadas offer other activities to explore.
