Verdes: River Landscape, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Verdes
Verdes draws attention to the Refuxio de Verdes and the Anllóns River. Water, stone and forest shape the landscape, along with trail options, waterfalls and examples of sacred art. If you are looking for a hotel in Verdes, you can plan your trip around your interests: riverside scenery, a short riverside walk, a longer hike, fishing or cultural history. The riverside trail at the Refuxio ends at the Sangueiroas; further stages continue to Ponte Dona and on to Ponteceso. The fishing area on the Anllóns is a stretch of river with two designated endpoints.
Riverside Landscape and History of the Refuxio
The Refuxio de Verdes brings together water, stone and forest in a landscape on the Anllóns. The Refuxio de Verdes fishing area is located in the Río Anllóns SAC (Special Area of Conservation). The recreational area has benches, tables and barbecue facilities. It was established in 1982, after the Instituto Nacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (ICONA) acquired and restored several mills; the mills were then used to accommodate friends of river fishing. The river setting, recreational area and history of the mills are distinct aspects of the Refuxio.
Riverside Trails and Waterfalls
The short trail at the Refuxio is about 500 metres long and runs along the right bank of the Anllóns River, from Muíño de Pose to the Sangueiroas. An additional one-kilometre stage leads to Ponte Dona, which connects the municipalities of Coristanco and Ponteceso. The trail can also be continued to Ponteceso, making the total distance about 14 kilometres. These are different distances to bear in mind when planning: 500 metres is the riverside trail, the additional kilometre is the section to Ponte Dona, and around 14 kilometres is the full distance to Ponteceso.
The Ruta dos muíños de Verdes is the hiking trail where you can see the Verdes waterfalls. Access to the waterfalls from the Verdes fishing refuge is easy and signposted.
The Fishing Area
For anglers, the kilometre figure refers to the extent of the fishing area, not a walking route: in 2026, the Verdes fishing area on the Anllóns River extends for 7.2 kilometres between Presa do Muíño do Reigoso and A Ponte Nova da Pontedona. Fishing regulations and permits depend on the season and may change. Check the rules that apply during your visit in advance.
Sacred Art at the Igrexa de Verdes
The heritage of the Igrexa de Verdes includes a processional cross from the final years of the 17th century. It consists of fine silver sheet over a wooden core. The church also preserves an image of its patron saint, San Adrián, attributed to Antonio de Meis.
