Bóveda: Pilgrim History, Mills and Landscapes
Accommodation in Bóveda
In Bóveda, culture and landscapes range from the history of the Camino de Santiago to viewpoints and hiking routes. When planning your trip, you can organize your interests around pilgrim history, rural heritage, knowledge of forests or outdoor trails.
Culture, Pilgrim History and Rural Heritage
The Capela de San Xil is a 12th-century Romanesque chapel. In the Middle Ages, it was an important pilgrimage center for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, which runs near Bóveda. Its construction and its history as a pilgrimage site give the chapel two distinct historical connections.
In Rubián, the Capela Ecce Homo dates from the 18th century. The Feira Outrora is held there every year on July 14. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event calendar in advance.
The mills along the Río Mao also offer a glimpse of historic rural life. The old mills include the Maseda Mill and Os Fernández Mill. They illustrate how closely rural life was connected to the use of the mills.
Views in the Serra das Penas
The Mirador Alto do Coto in the Serra das Penas is a viewing platform made of wood and steel. From there, you can see the Lemos Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. The named valley and mountain ranges give this viewpoint a distinct focus on the landscape.
The Mirador de Serra de Penas is at an altitude of 610 meters. From Casa do Concello de Bóveda, the route there is about 4 kilometers along the LU-P-0903, followed by a 300-meter unpaved path. As conditions on the road and path may change, check them before setting out.
Forest Knowledge and Hiking Routes
Aula Forestal Os Trollos offers educational and informational resources about the life cycle of trees and wood processing. The exhibition explains the process from planting to felling, as well as the different stages of processing. The topics therefore cover the journey from tree growth to the use of wood. Check local visitor information before your visit.
Two hiking routes start at Aula Forestal Os Trollos: the 5-kilometer Os Trollos route and the 18-kilometer Serra das Penas route. The Os Trollos route is the shorter of the two; the Serra das Penas route covers considerably more distance. If you want to choose based on length, you can compare the two distances directly.
Picnicking by the River
Área Recreativa Muiño do Xil has benches and tables by the river that are suitable for a picnic. This gives you a practical way to take a break outdoors, alongside the area’s historical and landscape attractions.
