In Burela de Cabo, historic traces of buildings and settlements tell of the area's past; at Cabo Burela, rocks, waves and distinctive geological formations shape the coast. Marked routes focus on a range of themes, taking you to cultural and natural points of interest. Depending on the route, you can explore on foot, by bicycle or in a motor vehicle.

Historic traces in Burela de Cabo

The Casa Torre, also known as the Casa Fuerte, dates from the 15th century. Originally, it was a fortified manor house connected with the settlement and the port economy. The defensive tower also served as the lord’s residence and symbolised the power whose seat was Burela de Cabo. Of the former Casa Torre, only the coat of arms remains on the building also known as Casa del Escudo.

Other traces date back to earlier periods. A Castro, a type of settlement typical of the Iron Age, stood at Cabo Burela. The Torques de Burela was also found there. A watchtower built in the 16th century at the cape served to warn of danger. The town also had a chapel called Santa Catalina, which was closed for worship at the end of the 18th century. The place name “A Capela” has survived to this day.

The townscape also brings together different periods: in the area around Burela de Cabo and on Calle Pascual Veiga, traces of a traditional rural setting are interspersed with newer urban buildings. At the cape, a monolith bears the inscription “Unha punta, unha pedra, un pobo” (“A point, a stone, a people”). A compass rose and the coordinates are also visible on it.

Coast and geology

At the rocky Cabo Burela, the waves break particularly forcefully during the wintering season. The Igrexa de Coeda reveals another side of the coastal landscape: it is a natural cave with distinctive geological features. Four arches support a dome-like formation through which water from the Cantabrian Sea flows in. The cave is also known as the “church” or “altar of the sea”. It lies in the Perdouro geological zone, which has been declared an area of international geological interest.

Another striking geological feature is O Xiringote, one of the few blowholes in granite rocks known worldwide. If you are interested in how the landscape formed and what it looks like, you can also visit the Área Geológica de A Marosa, near Burela de Cabo: a walk through the area offers the chance to explore its morphology.

Routes and excursions

The “Mar e Barro” route offers a way to visit a range of sites, with 13 marked stops. You can complete it on foot, by bicycle or in a motor vehicle. The route is 7.87 kilometres long, linear and generally considered easy. Some sections near the access to the Igrexa de Coeda are moderately difficult because of the terrain. Much of the route follows a paved seafront promenade and is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs. Check local terrain and tide conditions before visiting.

The Sendero Azul Ruta del Litoral Burelés passes within a few metres of the Castro at Cabo Burela. Around Burela de Cabo, you can walk or cycle this route. Another option is the approximately 16-kilometre Ruta Circular de Burela, which is of moderate difficulty and leads to the Miradoiro Monte Castelo. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Cantabrian coast. The distance and difficulty ratings give you an initial guide when choosing between a linear route and a circular one.

Playa de A Marosa is also nearby. Its surf is suitable for surfing, and facilities include parking, a recreational area with a children’s playground and showers. Lifeguard services are seasonal. Also nearby is the museum ship Barco Museo Boniteiro ‘Reina del Carmen’: this traditional wooden fishing vessel from the Cantabrian Sea was converted into an ethnographic museum in 2000. The different points of interest—coastal landscapes, traces of history and routes—can help guide you in choosing a hotel in Burela for your stay.
