Chavín is a parish in Viveiro and home to the Souto da Retorta Natural Monument. The area combines a eucalyptus grove with the Río Landro and historic links to its industrial past. If you stay in Chavín, there are several specific points of interest to explore: the protected landscape, a riverside path, the Salto do Can waterfall, and connections to hydropower and Viveiro’s electricity supply. These features can help guide you if both natural surroundings and local history matter when choosing a destination.

Landscape along the Río Landro

Souto da Retorta contains around 600 eucalyptus trees. The natural monument is located in the parish of Chavín, which is part of the municipality of Viveiro. The natural monument partly overlaps with the Río Landro Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) (ES1120012).

Path and waterfall

A short path along the banks of the Río Landro in Souto da Retorta offers views of waterfalls such as Salto do Can. The waterfall forms when water is released from the reservoir of the small hydroelectric plant. Salto do Can thus connects the river landscape with Chavín’s history of hydropower.

O Avó and industrial history

O Avó is a distinctive eucalyptus tree in the grove and stands more than 60 metres tall. In 2007, it was included in the Galician Catalogue of Singular Trees. The height describes the individual tree; its inclusion in the catalogue identifies it as a notable tree in Galicia. The grove and the individual tree offer complementary perspectives: Souto da Retorta as a whole contains around 600 eucalyptus trees, while O Avó stands out as a named tree.

Industrial history is also part of the area’s character. On the western edge of Souto da Retorta stands the building of the Central hidráulica de Chavín, which dates from the early 19th century. The site of today’s eucalyptus grove was once occupied by the Barro-Chavín industrial complex. The Central de Chavín supplied electricity to Viveiro from 1896.

Further history and current visitor information

Another historic landmark is the parish church of Santa María de Chavín. A commission for work on the church is documented for 1636. Alongside the industrial links, it is a church landmark dating back to the 17th century. Access to the Souto da Retorta Natural Monument was temporarily closed from the last week of June 2024 because of forest maintenance and restoration work. Check the current access status before travelling. Chavín’s history spans the commission for work on Santa María de Chavín (1636), the early-19th-century Central hidráulica building, and the supply of electricity to Viveiro from 1896.
